-This quote describes Lennie and George entering the opening setting by the river
-By using the word "follower", Steinbeck uses indirect characterization for Lennie. "Follower" implies that he is not in control of the situation and that, rather, Lennie looks to George for leadership and guidance.  This is very true of their relationship.
-"nearly ran over him" is also indirect characterization. It characterizes Lennie as being rather uncoordinated and unaware. "An' you ain't gonna do no bad things like you done in Weed, neither." I think this is indirect and direct because although George is saying that Lennie did something bad, we don't know what exactly he did.
"That ranch we're going to is right down there about a quarter mile...Now, look-I'll give him the work tickets, but you ain't gonna say a word. You jus' stand there and don't say nothing. If he finds out what a crazy bastard you are, we won't get no job, but if he sees ya work before he hears ya talk, we're set. Ya got that?" "Sure, George. Sure I got it" This shows that their relationship is very dependent on George and his quick wittedness. And Lennie just kind of goes along with whatever George says.

after George's rant, he realizes that he shouldn't get mad at Lennie because he doesn't know any better. This shows a softer side to George's personality, and proves that he can feel guilt. "you gonna get that wood?" George demanded, this is an example of George's dominance over Lennie. Indirect characterization.

On page 10, Lennie says "I'd pet'ed, and pretty soon they bit my fingers and I pinched their heads a little and then they was dead" That shows us how Lennie was completely unaware of how strong he was. And he was like a little kid who liked to pet soft things, with out taking his strength into consideration.
