18. Is the use of graffiti art and graffiti-inspired art by new businesses and developments in Santa Ana, like the Fourth Street Market, authentic?

The use of graffiti is often frowned upon, as it is a destruction of city property. However, as there are many artists in Santa Ana, who make a living from graffiti art, so it is authentic. By taking something negative and unpleasant to look at, artists are able to turn graffiti into a work of art.

19. Do these works of art represent the traditional roots of the hip hop/graffiti subculture in Santa Ana? Or are these businesses merely using the subculture to attract new clientele to downtown Santa Ana?

These works of art are important to represent our traditional roots of the urban and the ways of hip-hop. It is no secret that Santa Ana has not always been a very positive and safe city, but with gentrification and remodeling, we as a city, have grown into a place where different types of art forms are embraced and can also be used to attract clientele. Why not take advantage of our rich culture and put it to good use?

The image depicted below shows the current view of the Fourth Street Market. We can see that the ping-pong tables and lunch counters add a more vivacious and youthful approach so young people and families can enjoy a relaxing and entertaining lunch break. The graffiti mural brings back the subculture of the hip-hop undergrounds of Santa Ana and also adds a brighter scenery to a casual hangout place.
