Something that stuck with me from the meeting was the Brain in the Hand video and the language around it. I want to start using that language with students I work with to help illustrate how their brain is feeling (i.e. heavy brain, working brain, etc) I have heard Marian K use this often with students too.

Something that stuck with me was how important brain breaks and movement breaks are for all students. This is something that I have planned daily to keep myself accountable. As the year has gone on, my kids have gotten really good at advocating for a break if they need one earlier than scheduled or an additional one.

In my room, there are visuals for regulation/social skills/problem solving strategies, along with a box of fidgets for students who may need them. I work with students in a small group or 1:1, so we often are able to build a good rapport with each other, but I like the 2x10 idea for those students who are more at risk for dysregulation or who may just need a little more individual attention/support.

Something that stuck with me from the presentation was the "Calm Corner" or break spots in the rooms. I did this in my room last year, but don't have one this year. I'd like to try creating one so that students have a space to regulate themselves and get a little extra time/space when needed. We all need a break every now and then!
-Laura Price

Lindi Gill
While using second steps this year it has provided me with natural lessons and activities to work with students around their focus and attention and what to do if they are feeling frustrated or overwhelmed. I have made a chart for ways to calm down that hangs in the room for students to reference if they need it. We also do brain break activities and dances to help keep students active so they are focused. I like the idea of a calming corner and getting this set up. I need to give it more thought on how it would look in my room and work.

I currently have self-regulation charts in my classroom if students are upset. I also have a break station with a bin of fidgets for any students who may need them. We already use breathing for calming in my classroom. I do use brain breaks in my classroom is the students ask, but my math class uses a lot of games, so they rarely ask.
