The book introduces Amy and Dan as two school kids with an interesting past. Amy and Dan are attacked by mysterious men, but escape. Both of them later find out that 7 family members have been kidnapped by the Cahills' rival family, the Vespers. Amy and Dan are both devastated. They will not stop at anything to save them. On the Vespers strict orders, the siblings are forced to fly to Florence, Italy to steal the famous painting "Medusa" in the Uffizi gallery. They successfully steal the painting and deliver it to the Vespers, who find out that the painting is a fake, and shoot one of the 7 Kidnapper family members. Amy and Dan are furious and confused, and the mystery starts when they have to find out where the real painting is located. The group later finds out that the painting belongs to a ma named Gregor Tobin, and they steal it from his house and flee. On further examination of the painting, Dan finds words, written in Latin. With the help of Atticus, they find a connection in the words and the Roman Colliseum. Finding another original painting hidden there, Amy and Dan tell the Vespers that they have solved the mystery and found the painting that was requested. The Vespers reply by demanding another Task in Switzerland, which leads the reader to book number 2 in the series.
