         <description><![CDATA[<div>Lithuania's environmental problems include air pollution, water pollution, and the threat of nuclear contamination. The cement industry produces 299,000 metric tons of airborne pollutants per year. In 1996, industrial CO2 emissions totaled 13.8 million metric tons per year. A UN report on Lithuania stated that air pollution had damaged about 68.4% of the nation's forests.<br><br></div><div>Water pollution results from uncontrolled dumping by industries and the lack of adequate sewage treatment facilities. In the 1990s, 42% of the nation's treatment facilities were inoperative.<br><br></div><div><br></div>]]></description>

This UNESCO-inscribed 98 km long narrow Baltic Sea peninsula, now spanned by two countries (Lithuania and Russia), is unique both naturally and culturally. The powerful dunes that used to bury entire fishermen villages were tamed by planting pine forests. In 2017, this trend changed: both returning <strong>Lithuanians</strong> citizens and foreigners amounted to 50 <strong>percent</strong>.</div><div><br><strong>Poverty Rate<br></strong> Since 2010, the <strong>Lithuania poverty rate</strong> has stagnated around 1.5 percent by international standards, fluctuating marginally each year. As a high income country, it is not surprising that the <strong>poverty rate</strong> is relatively low.</div><div><strong>Literacy Rate<br></strong>99.8 %</div><div><br></div><div><strong>Lithuania</strong> - Adult (15+) <strong>literacy rate</strong>.
