1933: Hitler becomes Chancellor

Hindenburg wanted a Chancellor who had strong support in the Reichstag, so that Germany's economic problems could be tackled without distractions. His first choice was a wealthy aristocrat, Franz von Papen. However, he failed to win majority votes to form his own government from the July 1932 election. He was eventually forced to appoint Hitler as Chancellor.

1936: Rhineland Remilitarization

In March 1936, German troops occupied the Rhineland, an area of Germany demilitarized by the Versailles Treaty. The British and French did little but protest, despite the relative weakness of German forces at the time.

1938: Anschluss with Austria

The annexation of Austria by Nazi Germany, also known as Anschluss, was announced by the German government. On 12 March 1938 German troops crossed the Austrian border and secured critical sites.

1939: Munich Agreement

In an attempt to appease Hitler, the Munich Agreement allowed Germany to have the whole of Sudetenland. The policy of appeasement enabled Hitler to have his sights on the whole of Czechoslovakia.
