For many years now, women of color have been vocal about their mistreatment and the medical racism they endure when it comes to their reproductive and maternal healthcare. From the feelings that they have when they are present at their doctors appointments, to the large gap in mortality rates during birth compared to white women, the evidence implies that this disparity is very much real and alive. Through looking at multiple forms of research and discussions surrounding this topic, we can see that properly addressing these disparities in treatment is quite literally a matter of life and death for women of color and their children.

What do these disparities look like?

The issue of the medical racism that women of color are put through regarding their reproductive and maternal care is not something new. “Many studies have documented poorer patient-provider interactions among people of color compared to Whites, including lower-quality patient-provider communication, less involvement in decision making, and higher chances of perceived discrimination in healthcare encounters.” (Attansio, Hardeman). Because of the longstanding history of racism in the United States, women of color that seek out medical treatment may face a variety of ways in which they are discriminated against.

What Women of Color Have Told Us

A study conducted in 2018 was designed to look at the maternal healthcare experiences of women of color in relation to preterm labor. Through taking a closer look at this study, we can gain a better understanding of what the reality of this medical racism is like for women of color. One woman in the surveyed group for this study explained her experience as a Hispanic woman at length. “And I also wonder how much of the advice or -- yeah, advice they give you is based on our race because I was Hispanic and I was a teenager and I got pregnant, the nurse assumed I was going to be pregnant a whole lot of times and she suggested right away I should get rid of my child without asking me if I wanted to or not. So, is it based on my race? Is it based because I'm already high-risk of dropping out of high school because all that was told to me? So, they were already determining what I was going to do with and setting limits on me just because of my race. How much of that is influenced on my race? I think all of it.” (Altman).

With the many different forms of medical racism that women of color may face, there are many ways that this can affect women of color in the long run. Some of these are higher childbirth mortality rates, disparities in access to fertility treatments, lack of research for reproductive issues disproportionately affecting them, and underrepresentation of women of color in medical studies. “Taken together, the picture is clear: the disparities we see in women’s health funding, research, delivery, innovation, data collection, and outcomes are consistently amplified multifold for women of color.” (Beim).
