Unfortunately most people/parents have had a teacher that was not the best. Some have had a bad teacher. Those memories stick with people. With the rise of social media, less than positive events or allegations are often posted putting education in a bad light, whether true or not.

Establishing positive relationships with local media to highlight students successes and positive teacher/paraprofessional impacts.

Heading us to the goal of having Educators to be Revered.

School bus certification is arduous and lengthy. It requires 2-4 days of Behind the Wheel training and testing by a DMV Trainer. NC DOT DMV is extremely short-staffed forcing districts to wait months before a driver candidate can be tested. For example, New Hanover County Schools shares 2 DMV Trainers among 4 districts and wait time is 4-8 weeks. If NCDOT allowed districts to hire their own Trainer not only to train the candidate which is currently allowed, but to actually administer the test. It would get new drivers, coaches, and those recertifying on the road faster.

Pay for classified staff

The challenge the education community faces is that we do not pay the trade having classified staff.

Classified staff are often treated as second class citizens. They are viewed/treated as less than the certified staff. Traditionally, many certified staff were good at school, went to college, and then returned to be teachers. They may not have been a "worker", or have forgotten what it is to be one.

The message for the last 10 year or so has been for students to go to community college and learn a trade.

With pay we need to recognize the skilled classified staff are important to making sure that our vision of a young student gets to a sound, clean, temperately comfortable school by safely riding on a fully functioning bus driven by an engage competent professional.

Being a good neighbor

The county I work in might be one of the larger population wise in the state. We have many small communities and a medium sized NC city in this county.

Because of that it is important to me that remember to be a good neighbor. Being a good neighbor is important to connect to the rural roots of the county and survived tribulations our country's history. Neighbors help each other get through the tough times and celebrate the good times together. It is important to pass that on to our suburban and urban neighbors while refreshing it with the rural folks. Being a good neighbor is important for making our community, students, parent, and staff feel connected to one another. It means admitting when we are wrong and working to fix it. Being a good neighbor builds cohesion and trust. When people trust you and feel connected to you they want to send their kids to your school. When kids feel connected and have faith in their neighbors they listen and learn wisdom and knowledge.
