Over the last month Fourth Grade students have been learning about the geography and history of the land we call “Utah,” while at the same time developing critical art skills like use of colored pencil to master depth, value, proportion, color and texture with an emphasis on capturing the landscapes and landforms of Southern Utah, red rock desert and all the unique land features it brings to the table.

On the heels of our unit on Artist Trading Cards, we have now launched into watercolor painting. Having just completed texture boards in all 4th Grade classes this week, we will begin painting landscapes of a different nature after the break, building on the Robert Frost poem the students will “unpack” during ELA following Thanksgiving break.

They were to write an acrostic poem with the aforementioned theme. Once drafted, students could turn their attention to designing the visual presentation of their poems with Adobe Express.

Check out some examples of these gratitude poems and their digital designs and media in the photo above, or stop by the cafeteria/gymnasium at Longview to see the work in person.

This week in Visual Arts we have been celebrating gratitude as the Native Americans have been doing since the beginning of time.

The “Thanksgiving Address,” (the Ohen:ton Karihwatehkwen) is the invocation for the Haudenosaunee (also known as the Iroquois Confederacy or Six Nations — Mohawk, Oneida, Cayuga, Onondaga, Seneca, and Tuscarora). It reflects their relationship of giving thanks for life and the world around them.

The “Thanksgiving Address” teaches mutual respect, conservation, love, generosity, and the responsibility to understand that what is done to one part of the “Circle of Life,” we do to ourselves.

Students from every grade level contributed to our celebration by creating artwork to reflect a section of the text.

You can read the “Thanksgiving Address” by clicking the attachment below, then view the finished artwork in the subsequent photos. You can also come view the panels in person, currently on display in the cafeteria/gymnasium of Longview Elementary.
