One main reason for spies is due to the fact that some people in the north wished for the south to win, while some in the south wished for the north to win, due to this both sides would recruit people from the opposite side.

Spies were extremely vital due to the fact that whatever information they pass on-spanning from but not limited to the current status the enemy holds, the enemies condicion, the number of soldiers, etc- could determine the outcome of the winning losing battle.Spies could also help generals decide if its best to retreat or attack the enemy.

Although being a spy seems a bit cool and fun as the modern day frames it to so be, although that is and never was the case. Being a spy ment the person given that job had to walk on egg shells to not blow their cover, if a spy happened to be caught they would be executed without a word, the punishment for spies was usually execution unlike soldiers.

Other than male spies, female spies had great ways of getting the the top secret information that was needed. One of these tricks was to flirt and presaude men into giving up the information they needed. Women would also use their clothes to their advantage. Seeing as back in the day the current era of ladys dresses were bell shaped, often used to retain that shape was a metal piece called a crinoline, which was hoop shaped and had bars that were perfect to tie objects on, which is what female spies did to smuggle things like guns and ammo, they could do this and manage to get away with it.
