Mrs. Cohen, a first grade teacher, used student-crated podcasts in place of traditional student-created paper/pencil books. Students were required to collaboratively write a story that would flatten them and send them on a traveling adventure, much like the book "Flat Stanley". Due to the fact that a podcast is an audio recording, Mrs. Cohen emphasized to her students' that they needed to include descriptive words to make their words come to life. Students recorded their stories using "Garage Band". The stories were then arranged together into one, coherent story. The podcast was posted on the classroom website and individuals from all around the world listened and left comments. Not only did this task allow for students to become familiar with web-based tools, students were able to make global connections with people and places around the world.

Story Bird is a free online interactive tool that allows students to create digital books. Students select from preset themes (selection of illisturations) and add in their own words. When students have created their digital story, they publish their work and have the option to purchase a paperback copy of their creation. This tool is not replacing the concept of creating a story, it is enhancing the way a student can create a unique, personal story.
https://storybird.com
