The Puritans of Salem Massachusetts valued religion and order. This shaped their idea of the American dream because they are the core values of their society. Without religion there would be no governance or order to them. They need religion in order to maintain peace and prosperity. That is their American dream. Their American dream is to live peacefully in their own autonomous community with religion and order.

During the Enlightenment, American colonists valued freedom. They valued freedom from oppression and government. They did not want their privacy or security to be infringed upon which is why many states desperately valued the need for a Bill of Rights. Their American Dream was to live freely and peacefully without too much interruption from the government. The values such as freedom and liberty greatly shaped this new vision of the American Dream.
