The Supreme Court recently invalidated affirmative action in college admissions, a decision that affects institutions such as Harvard and the University of North Carolina. They claimed race cannot be a factor in admissions. This ruling marks a significant victory for conservatives, challenging decades of legal precedent and prompting colleges to reconsider their admissions practices. Justices Clarence Thomas, Sonia Sotomayor, and Ketanji Brown Jackson, the court's three justices of color, voiced starkly differing opinions on the matter. President Biden expressed strong disagreement with the ruling, urging colleges to seek alternative methods for achieving diversity. The decision has sparked widespread debate over the role of race in admissions, with many colleges reaffirming their commitment to diversity despite the legal setback.

Vocabulary

Affirmative action: A policy or program aimed at increasing the representation of certain groups that have historically been discriminated against.

Invalidating: Declaring something as legally void or without effect.

Precedent: A legal principle or decision that serves as a guide or basis for future cases.

Dissenter: A judge who disagrees with the majority opinion in a court case.

Adversity: Difficulties or challenges; a state of hardship or misfortune.

Summary : The former president Donald Trump's attempt to be included as an independent candidate on the state's 2023 presidential ballot was denied by the Colorado Supreme Court in 2023. The decision maintained the finding of a lower court that determined Trump had not gathered enough legitimate signatures to be eligible for the ballot. The court rejected Trump's legal team's argument that the state's signature requirement was unconstitutional and emphasized the need of adhering to election regulations. Trump had been considering other avenues to run for government after losing the 2020 presidential contest, so this move was a blow to his political aspirations. The decision reiterated how important it is to follow election laws, especially in divisive political contexts.

They talked about enforcing it but havent showed any true changes to show that this is gonna happen and its gonna stay. Many end up complaining how they treat the code of ethics like a friednly suggestion instrad of something that is truly set in stone/ enforced. The court then proceeded to say that they would give at least some disclosure when one or two of them deicdeds to not tka epart in a case, but then dont end up doing so.

In the article, the publisher explains the controversy on the Capitol riot on January 6, 2021. A lot of people speculate Trump as a insurrectionist because he had Tweeted about the upcoming election with Biden. This caused a rally of people who supported him to take down the capitol, in turn attempting to destroy electoral votes. During the whole thing, Trump sat in his office watching the mob going against the government on television. It was only awhile til he actually told them to stop, but he still stood behind their actions. This day was the reason he was banned on Twitter for acts of threatening/violence. Of course, the storm in the Capitol didn't do much to overturn the election since Biden did win eventually.

One Tuesday night the Colorado Supreme Court declared that Donald Trump is ineligible for a position in the white house. This decision will last until the U.S. Supreme Court steps in between this debate. Trump's spokeswoman, Alina Habba claimed that this ruling was unconstitutional and that they rely on the Supreme Court to reverse the order. However, Trump doesn't necessarily need Colorado's votes to help him win the upcoming election. This is because back in 2020, he had lost Colorado by only 13%.

On January 6, 2021, loyal people of Trump invaded the U.S. Capitol trying to continue Trump's presidency for the next 4 years. This invasion resulted in deaths and damage to a peaceful democracy in a long time. Elective representatives hid under their desks terrified and Trump was supporting these behaviors. Tweets that Trump posted on Twitter supported these actions however, in interviews, he asked his supporters to stop their actions and "Go home in peace." With the election in a couple of weeks, Trump supporters did their best to keep Trump in power and not let Biden beat Trump. Unfortunately for his supporters, Biden got elected as the next president. Then again, they terrorized Biden and started protesting. Again, they broke into the U.S. Capitol more violently. Many people were injured and killed. That didn't stop them until they got what they wanted.

In the article, it states that universities have concluded, wrongly, that the touchstone of an individual’s identity is not skills built or lessons learned but the color of their skin. Many were assessing the impact but still had to follow the law. Reginald DesRoches, president of Rice University was greatly disappointed on the other hand and stated, "The law may change, but Rice’s commitment to diversity will not." And lastly, Obama said in a statement that affirmative action “allowed generations of students like Michelle and me to prove we belonged. Now it’s up to all of us to give young people the opportunities they deserve." Which is something I agree with on Obama.

On Thursday, The Supreme Court struck down the action in college admissions, declaring race can't be a factor of higher education to look for new ways to gain diverse students. Biden at the White House declares, to our nation’s colleges: “They should not abandon their commitment to ensure student bodies of diverse backgrounds and experience that reflect all of America.” Additionally, Roberts wrote that institutions, “may not simply establish through application essays or other means the regime we hold unlawful today.” Many colleges still remain committed to the diverse practice regardless of what the court has stated. 63% of U.S. adults have said that the court should let colleges consider race as part of the admissions process. Few adults believe students’ race should play a major role in decisions.

In the article, the incident that happened on January 6, 2021 also known at the Attack on the Capital was caused by an angry mob of Pro-Trump supporters during the 2021 presidential elections. When it was announced that Joe Biden won the elections it infuriated Ex-President Donald Trump and his supporters which took the way in storming the U.S. Capitol which caused few casualties and many injuries as well as damage done to the government building. Trump claimed that the votes were fraud and tampered with which changed the outcome of the elections. After this storm, lawmakers then clarified and validated that the votes were indeed in the favor of Biden. The final vote was 306-232 where Biden defeated Trump, this vote and the outrage of Pro-Trump supporters caused even 1,100 District of Colombia National Guard members to come out and help law enforcement officers help defend and support the Capital. This goes to show how violent and dangerous the actual attack was and this was all blamed on Trump and he supported the march that took place to the capital.

This article talks about Trump and his eligibility for reelection. It talks about Jan 6 and his involvement in it; and if that disqualifies him to get elected. It says that the motion for this was started in Colorado and has now made its way up to the Supreme Court. The question now is what will the Supreme court do? The other question is when is it before or after the election?

The Florida Supreme Court ordered that all counties should recount "under-votes" due to the contested ballots being enough for the results to be put into doubt. Bush and his running mate put in a petition for this to be reviewed in the U.S. Supreme court. Then it was held to oral discussion. They found the recounting of ballots to be unconstitutional. Also no recount could happen in the time remaining.

Bush v Gore is the case battle between Gorge W. bush and Al Gore who was vice president at the time. Gore put into question the fact that Florida's supreme court had made a new law that put Bush in favor. when he went to florida's supreme court the U.S had heard about it and decided to take the case. They did agree that the law was unnecessary and that it broke a clause. In the end they decided that it was Florida's choice but that they still should not change the elections.

The Supreme Court had adopted its first code of ethics when they had been receiving backlash for previous events. Their reasoning for these mistakes was that there was misunderstanding so it had turned into miscommunication, but not "missteps from the justices". Due to misunderstanding they had to conduct the code to make things right. After much debating people still hadn't been satisfied with their decisions. They had been looked into as a whole court due to all codes and ethical studies. In the end, there was some disclosure but not much had been accomplished.

The Supreme Court is set to determine if Trump can keep running for president. The reason why is that the Colorado Supreme Court ruled that Trump is ineligible for the presidency because he violated a "rarely used constitutional prohibition on those who hold office having “engaged in insurrection.”." Trump's team argues that this rule (Section 3) does not exactly apply to the president. There are many things that the Supreme Court could rule. Most legal viewers believe Trump will win because the court is very hesitant to limit the people's choices.

Unprecedented: Never done or known before.

Ineligible: Legally or officially unable to be considered for a position or benefit.

Insurrection: A violent uprising against an authority or government.

Amnesty: A general pardon for offenses, especially political offenses, against a government, often granted before any trial or conviction.

Disqualify: Pronounce (someone) ineligible for an office, activity, or competition because of an offense or infringement.

In this article, it discussed why it was necessary to have a code of ethics in our legal system. They talk about how this codification would help govern our conduct. At first many thought it was a misunderstanding of justices by not having any reinforcement in the code of conduct. One of the biggest arguments that was debated is that ethics were doing nothing to help our government dispute cases efficiently and with justice.

This article discusses the case regarding the incident between George W. Bush and Al Gore. In this case, every county in florida was directed to recount their votes. However, an accusation was made, and it was that the Florida Supreme Court's idea of recounting ballots was "unconstitutional." This then led to the two presidential candidates to be investigated by the U.S. Supreme Court. After oral discussion, the argument of unconstitutional voting practices was further confirmed.

As a result, his legal team plans to challenge the Supreme Court that wants to remove him from the ballot. This also demonstrates that Trump can still be prosecuted for interference with the election. The court's response will determine the stability in the electoral process, as well as allowing the other branches of government to decide.
