He leaves his land to travel to America. However, he arrives to the Land of Women and he is alienated by all women in that place. As the article When the Ghosts Speak: Oral and Written Narrative Forms in Maxine Hong Kingston's China Men states, the characters of the short story are “unchanging in an unchangeable world” (Slowik 3). “On Discovery” is a story so enclosed as the development of the story. Tang Ao is forced to dress like a woman and destined to be marginalized by every woman. The interesting part is that he does not question his fate or try to escape from the Land of Women. Tang Ao is dressed like a woman, his feet are used as a mark of feminine beauty, and he becomes a woman appealing to the men’s gaze. The protagonist portrays the reality of Asian American women in the sense that patriarchy oppresses them twice: “In the case of Asian women, besides being perceived as aliens, they have to remain silent” (Meyers & Pacheco 89). Kingston portrays the situation that Asian American women suffer in the figure of Tang Ao by switching his role in the story and enclosed him using the narration of the story. 

            A song that can exemplify the short story is "Numb" by Linkin Park. Even though the author of the song has another purpose with the song, the lyrics exemplify the experience of being trapped by the someone else. Unlike the short story, the persona in the song has a voice to express his/her feelings towards the situation. This can be a response to those women that have felt trapped in a cage called patriarchy.

First, we have a matriarchy, and not a patriarchy that is oppressing men. This society, which is governed by women, takes by force a man and forces him to destroy his foot in order that he can put some shoes.
The author did this in order to impress people about the harsh reality that women from china lived in the past. They, the women, needed to break the bones of their feet in order to be more elegant. If it was women, it was natural and cultural, but in this case the victim was a male. Because the victim of mutilation is a man, people are going to be alarmed of the explicit process that he went.  But at the same time, this reverse of roles makes women more empowered. They now are a symbol of respect and fear, as the man believed they were because of the way they treated her. This switch of roles recovers the agency of women.
