When Rainsford released the tree it hit Zaroff. Zaroff tried to move but he wasn't quick enough so it hit him in the shoulder. He didn't fall of yell he just laughed. This is also quicksand so he got stuck at first but then took a few yards back and dug himself a wall to sit behind. Zaroff was right there but he kept calm because he didn't have much longer.
