Challenge One: Island Architect

Day One: Me, Victoria, and Cameron were on a boat and a storm started, it got so bad that huge waves started crashing on to the boat, making it start to sink. Since the boat was sinking, we abandoned ship and went on to one of the extra boats. We finally reached a deserted island. We decided to make shelter because the storm wasn’t dying down. We gathered as much materials as we could, which were a few sticks and some palm fronds. We started building but then the wind blew our whole shelter down. That night we were very wet and cold since our shelter was in pieces.

In this challenge we had to build a shelter that could cover all of our group and be freestanding and be built in 30 minutes. Our original design was going to be a wide short hut that had newspaper supports. In the end the prototype didn’t met the objectives, it collapsed. The poles were strong enough to hold the roof but we couldn’t get the poles attached to the floor or the roof. The roof wasn’t large enough, and there weren’t walls. Next time I would see if we could have more materials or a different floor, the floor was too slick to tape anything to it.

Challenge Two: Crocodile Crossing

Day Two: The next day, we had to build a bridge out of twigs and things that we can gather on the island to get food on the other side of the river. We use leafs to tie the twigs together and try to hold all of our weight, so we can get across. We started to walk across the bridge. Both Victoria and I got across but by the time Cameron got across the bridge started to sway and break in the middle. Cameron started dangling off the middle of the bridge. Victoria and I reached forward and saved Cameron from falling to his death. He got up and couldn’t walk anymore. We realized that he had broken a foot. Victoria and I had to leave Cameron by the bridge to get food and then we found Little Jimmy and asked him to help Cameron. He went to go help Cameron while me and Victoria went to go look for food.

In this challenge we had to build a bridge out of pasta that could hold 5 pounds and a small figure needed to be able to walk across. Our original design was a truss bridge with a enforced bottom. In the end the prototype did meet the objectives, it held 7 pounds. The rigatoni and the layered lasagna helped support the bottom. But, it didn't give it enough support to stop it from breaking in the end. Next time, I would layer masking tape in the bottom and put some in between the layers of lasagna.

Challenge Three: Message in a Bottle

Day Three: Today when I woke up, I was alone. I wondered around the beach until I found Saher and Kahari. Saher and Kahari’s groups abandoned them, so we came together to form a group. We had one goal….to get off this island! Kahari came up with a plan to build a mini boat to send the SOS. We used a palm frond as a bottom and built a small structure of sticks on top of it. We then wrapped it in some more palm fronds to cover the sticks. We then wrapped the letter and small boat in a TON of leaves. We then put it in the ocean and hoped for the best.

In this challenge we had to build a small water proof vessel that floats. Our original design was the bottom being made out of Styrofoam, then we added layers of Popsicle sticks on top of the Styrofoam. Then we covered the Popsicle sticks in aluminum foil and then covered the whole thing in a few layers of saran wrap. In the end the prototype was successful. It floated and the note didn't get wet. It took a few try's though. Next time I would make the boat smaller.

Challenge Four: Pirate Defense

Day Four: Today we spotted a ship on the horizon. As it got closer, Saher realized it was a pirate ship, so we had to come up with an idea to keep them away. We made a catapult out of some wood, and some woven palm fronds. After we started to launch it, we realized it wasn't going to work. So, then we ran into the forest and hid.

In this challenge we had to build a catapult that could hit the target, 8/10 times. Our original design was that the spoon would be supported by two Popsicle sticks. and held down by tape. In the end the prototype didn't work, it couldn't hit the target, but it could go far. Next time I would elevate the base more by putting Popsicle sticks under it.

Challenge Five: Float Your Boat

Day Five: We had lost hope about the bottle, so we started to build a boat. The boat was made of wood, palm fronds, and some metal we found on the beach. It took us about 4 days to finish it. The boat could hold our weight but it couldn’t move very far. We built an oars that would make the boat move. We managed to get to an inhabited island. We then got on a plane and went back home to our normal lives.

In this challenge we had to build a boat that was self-propelled. It had to move 20 inches and hold 20 pennies. Our original design was the plate is going to be used as a holder for the coins, the Popsicle sticks are going to keep the coins from falling. The peanuts will be used to keep it floating and the Popsicle sticks would be propellers.
In the end the prototype didn't move 20 inches but it could hold our weight. Next time I would plan the propeller first and then build the boat based off the propeller instead of the other way around.
