Leave Before The Lights Come On by Arctic Monkeys.
Directed by John Hardwick
Released in 2006 on the bands website
Starring British actors Paddy Considine and Kate Ashfield.

They are a British band from Sheffield and came onto the music scene around 2002. Their style of music is indie rock and the band were one of the first to promote and distribute their music through the internet. This paved the way for more viral marketing. This song is interesting because I like the fact that the lyrics don't necessarily link to the story that unfolds within the music video. I like the relationship between the two characters, the fact that he 'saved' her life - she was going to jump off the roof but we don't really find out why - was it because of a man? Then in the cafe she seems grateful and starts to be clingy. He leaves and she follows him around the city - it's shot in the band's home town of Sheffield and the locations are gritty and realistic. I like it that we never hear what the 2 people say to each other, but the music is punchy and edgy with distinct guitar and drums. She goes to kiss him but lets her know he's married and then the short film takes a turn as they both become aggressive and it feels like a scene from a realistic film. I like how the film comes 'full circle' as she goes back to place she started and starts the cycle all over again by attracting another young guy on the street, almost as if this is a game to her. The music and style is specifically British and the band attracted a massive audience of young males and females.

Downtown by Macklemore and Ryan Lewis. Directed by Ryan Lewis, Jason Koenig & Ben Haggarty. Released 2015, USA. Right from the opening scene this is an interesting music video that plays with conventions and form. I love Vespa scooters so it appeals to me and the music kicks in straight away when the three guys start dancing across the screen. The genre of music is specifically American Hip Hop, the choreography is incredible and the rhythm and beat is energetic. The film that accompanies the song feels at times like a scene from a musical theatre production (it reminds me of West Side Story set in New York) with two opposing 'gangs' squaring up to each other on the streets. The tricks on the motorbikes are fun, the girls are conventionally placed and objectified which is fairly routine for these types of videos - the guys are central to the film, the girls are attractive and sexualised. There is humour too - the sight of large muscular guts on tiny mopeds is comical and the video makes fun of itself. The 'characters' often lip synch to the lyrics which creates for a fun performance and draws the audience in with the lyrics. The second part of the video gets quite surreal with all the scooter like chariots from a Gladiator film - the character on the gold chariot in costume, the flexible dance routines and the slow motion editing creates a unique and fresh video.

Director: Michel Gondry Artist: Bjork Title: Bachelorette. Released: 1997. I remember when Bjork (Icelandic artist) came onto the music scene and provided a really unique fresh approach to music performance, way before Lady Gaga. She is unconventional and unique and very rarely conventional. I love the director Michel Gondry's style and work as a film maker too. The great thing about this video is that it is very complex and theatrical- the idea that she is a character within the video and the abstract quality of the settings - objects appearing larger than life and almost like a theatre set with a live audience watching. The premise is that the 'bachelorette' character Played by Bjork) finds a book in her garden that writes itself; this turns out to be a story of her life. She takes it to a publisher ( she falls in love with him) but he wants to make money out of this and exploits her situation. He publishes her 'story' and soon everyone is reading her book; it gets turned into a musical with Bjork playing herself in the show within a show. There is an 'Alice in Wonderland' feel to this music video that is complex and intricate. One of the messages in the video is about corporate greed, art, self referentiality and surreal imagery. It is quite unlike most conventional music videos and I think it is a great example of how film and story telling can combine to challenge conventions.

Directed by Xavier Dolan
Released on 23/10/2015

Genre: Soul

British Singer Adele works together with producer Greg Kurstin to release “Hello”, the lead single of her third studio album “25”. “Hello” is a piano ballad with soul influences, and contains lyrics that links to moods of nostalgia and regret.

The concept of the MV focuses on a recently broken-up woman (Adele) calling a younger version of herself. Several cuts of Adele’s past is shown, mainly a man who has assumably broken up with her. Adele occasionally lip-syncs to the song. Colour correction has been made to the video so it gives the viewer kind of an “old” feel, emphasising upon something in the past. I like this video because it gives me a kind of sad and emotional feel, and this is a part of the reality in life where we have ups and downs. This video is quite realistic to me.

“Hello” earned 27.7 million views on Youtube in 24 hours, breaking the Vevo Record previously held by Taylor Swift’s “Bad Blood”. It also broke the record for the shortest time to reach 100 million views, previously held by Miley Cyrus’ “Wrecking Ball”, and took only 88 days for the MV to reach a billion views.

“Hello” topped the charts in almost every country, including the UK. It is recognized as Adele’s second UK number-one single, the first being “Someone Like You” (2011). By the end of 2015, it had sold 12.3 million units globally and was the 7th best selling single of the year.

The music video starts off in a working place. A young and beautiful lady is sorting papers out. An unusual weird looking man with an uncommon face comes in the room to print documents. The young lady looks back and screams as she’s frightened by the man printing. She realises he’s human and that he works there hence she calms down. A montage of colleagues bullying the ‘ugly’ adult commences. As well as montages of the main going through everyday chores. But one day the mean co-workers starts to harass the woman that screamed at the start of the music video. But the main protects her which results in both of them getting closer. The Music Video follows the sad lyrics and tone of the song.

Directed by Samuel Bayer

Date released: April 17, 2012

Genre - Pop rock, hip hop

Being in existence for 23 years now, the band has many albums one being ‘Overexposed’ that the song ‘Payphone’ is in. The American band, Maroon 5 published this song which has more than 300 million views as it’s 2nd song in the album. Featuring Wiz khalifa, he helped with the chronology of the song. The song was released on April the 17th and was composed to be a pop rock or hip hop song.

The denotative plot of the song starts off by having the main character, dressed up in very demolished clothes, old and burnt due to the fire and is at a payphone calling someone. However, it then cuts as a flashback and is about the main character working, but suddenly his working space gets robbed by armed thieves. The protagonist then runs and saves, what believes to be his crush grabbing her hands and running outside. Running further away, the protagonist gets chased by the police and the rest of the song is about him leaving the girl and a safe place and driving a car escaping the police while they’re in pursuit. The song ends back at the same place at the payphone.

I like this song’s music video because of it’s sync and groove that correlates with the visuals and audio. The extra sound effects or foley: police sirens, gun shot noises add realism to the music video. The fact that it’s realistic makes the viewer or audience feel like they are really in that situation with the protagonist.

“Payphone” has a unique music video due to its plot line that matches perfectly to the music and that what makes it special is its realism.

Also, we can tell that in order to make the music video, they had to put extra efforts in it in terms of makeup and having the special effects of bloody hands and faces. Without those things, it will be less interesting and attractive as they are important to make the video looked realistic.

I also love the way that they include all the members of the band in it by showing their performance for this song in a narrow street. Then, they have a scene when they actually included dialogue which the audience can hear what they’re talking about before continue singing starting with a screaming part. Though the lyrics of the song doesn’t seem to be related with the music video, the music can still get along with the storyline.

To perform the song “Everything has changed” from Taylor Swift’s fourth album “Red”. This song is her sixth single that was released on June 14 of 2013. The song is written in the genre of a guitar ballad.

The song opens up with two kids, a boy and girl, presumably having this connection of love emphasizing on the childhood’s relationship. They are in school and are always with each other. From sneaking out of class, to eating lunch together. Showing their day together and how they spend time with each other in school. The song’s lyrics relate to how a person feels when they have fallen love with someone or has a crush on someone.

The reason I like is because of the filming that has been put together with the music, showing the cute concept of young love. I like how the kids hang out with each other a lot during the video and rely on each other. The main highlight that I liked in the video was the acoustic beat to the music, with the guitar and percussion with the drums.

What makes it good is that if you were to have watch the music video for the first time you would think that the two kids are Taylor and Ed when they were little. Instead they are the children to Taylor and Ed, as it is shown on the last scene of the song when school had come to an end and they run to their individual parents.

Even though they are signed by a record label (Equal Vision Records), most of the footage is shot by the band themselves and in my opinion fits with what the song is trying to portray.

The song shows the band’s adventure and experiences as they venture out and try “something new”. This includes some of them facing their fears head on while others are doing things they have dreamed about doing. Through this they perform in places you wouldn’t normally expect a band to play (Underwater, Bouncy House).

In my opinion this really sends the message on how life is short and you need to go out there and experience new things and face your fears.

It also includes all the band members and shows each members fear (goal for one member) and them having interaction or trying it. The band looks like they are having fun and you can tell by their reactions in the video.

Another small thing I like is that a few members from another band helped with the writing process of the song. The band that helped was All Time Low and is one of the bands I listen to mainly because both bands have a similar music style.

Director = Sebastian Ringler

Artist = Avicii (Tim Bergling)

Released = 22nd of May 2015

Genre = Progressive house

The "Waiting For Love" music video follows an old man chasing the vision of a woman that he loves a long way across a country. Using a picture and memories of her at his bedside before he presumably got very sick and nearly died, the man wakes up and goes on an epic journey in an electric powered wheelchair across rolling countryside, mountainous terrain and long stretches of road.

His chair breaks down at one point and requires repairs and he is stopped by a fallen tree branch that prevents his moving any further only to get aided and escorted to his final destination by a rather rowdy motorcycle gang. He eventually makes it to his love with a big party going on in the streets for him.

-------------------------------------------------
One of my favourite aspect of the music video, were the two main characters. The two of them had strong cohesive characterisation, which role-played very well with the main message of the story. The idea of the old man traveling across the country, finding the love of his life, was profoundly an interesting way of conveying the message “Waiting For Love”, which I thought was brilliant. It’s simple to understand, yet executed smoothly.

BigBang - Lies 거짓말 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Cv3phvP8Ro) Director: Cha Eun-Taek Date Released: Oct 2 2008 Genre: K-pop, Romance Album: 1st Mini Album “Always” Featured Artist: BigBang (G-Dragon, T.O.P, Seungri, Daesung, Taeyang) Bigbang, a South Korean boy band formed by YG Entertainment officially debuted in 19th of August 2006. And started of with the first ever mini album called “Always” and is a K-pop genre. The concept of this music video is emphasizing in one of the members - G-Dragon singing the emotions of him loving a girl so that he covered a crime for her which has assumed the guy that she killed probably abuse her or something. And as you can see when she entered the “house”, she reviewed on her memories to tell and show the audience what happened. This music was released in 2008 so the quality of the music video might not be that good compared to the ones nowadays but it has a really huge impact on the storyline and it actually links with the meaning of the song which is why I’m still obsessed with the song itself and the music video. The meaning of the song basically means that a guy loves a girl and he’s willing to do everything for her and even covered up her mistakes. “Lies” earned 36 millions views on the YG Entertainment YouTube channel and it’s actually a huge success for BigBang and YG entertainment because as for a newbie boy band group, the music video was so overwhelmed and broke some of the records back then.
