I constructed my own Business Model Canvas for Swopped In to better understand the key elements that shape how the business can operate successfully. I broke it down into sections such as the value proposition, customer segments, and customer relationships to clearly define who the service is targeting and how it provides unique benefits. I also considered channels for reaching customers, key activities and resources needed to deliver the service, as well as important partnerships that could support growth. Finally, I looked at cost structures and revenue streams to understand the financial side of the model. By mapping out these components, the Business Model Canvas gave me a clear overview of how Swooped In can create, deliver, and capture value.

Week 6 Check in Question? Accountability Buddy - Sophia

My Question:
Do you think I have been collecting enough evidence? How would you recommend I organise the collected evidence to present to a feedback group?

Accountability Buddy Response:
I think you’ve collected a strong amount of evidence so far, but the organisation could be improved to make it easier for others to follow. I recommend creating a clearly labelled section called “Week 6 Check-In.” Under this heading, you could group all your evidence together in a logical order that shows your development process. Include short descriptions that explain what each piece of evidence shows and how it connects to your business concept. This will make your work more cohesive and allow your feedback group to clearly see your progress and reasoning.

Accountability Buddy Question:
How do you plan to use all the evidence you have collected, and how will it be reflected in your Week 9 check-in?

My Response:
I plan to use the evidence I have gathered to refine and strengthen my Business Model Canvas. Each piece of evidence will help me justify and adjust different elements such as my target audience, key activities, and value proposition based on the feedback I’ve received so far.

For the Week 9 check-in, I aim to present a more feedback-driven version of my business concept. I will create a small feedback group made up of peers, mentors, and potential users to evaluate my app and website design. Their input will guide the next stage of development, particularly in improving the visual layout, user activity flow, and overall usability of my platform. By combining my collected evidence with this external feedback, I hope to demonstrate clear growth and a more professional, user-centred design direction for my project.

I have begun developing my customer persona characters by first considering their internal influences and needs, such as their motivations, values, goals, and personal preferences, which shape the way they interact with a product or service. For example, I thought about what drives them, whether it is convenience, affordability, or self-improvement, and how these needs influence their decisions. Alongside this, I also explored external factors, including their geographical location, environment, and access to resources, as these elements affect what options are available to them and what challenges they may face. By combining both the internal and external influences, I am able to create more realistic and relatable personas that help guide the design and functionality of my project.

I have constructed this planner to help me stay organised by breaking down the project into clear phases and smaller tasks, which makes it easier to track my progress step by step. I also included stages for creating forms and collecting feedback, as this allows me to consistently check how effective my prototype is and apply improvements based on real responses. By structuring the planner this way, I can manage my time more effectively, stay accountable, and ensure that feedback is an active part of the development process.

I have constructed a Google Form to gather key demographic information from potential users in order to support the development of the content and design of my app. The form includes questions on age, gender, location, occupation, and digital habits, such as preferred devices and app usage frequency. These insights will help ensure that the app’s features, layout, and tone are tailored to the needs and preferences of the target audience. By analysing the collected data, I can make informed decisions about the visual design, user interface, and types of content that will be most engaging and accessible to users across different demographic groups.

The survey results revealed that 67.5% of respondents identified as female, while 27.5% identified as male. This significant difference indicates that the majority of the target audience for the website will be women, which will strongly influence the overall approach to design and user experience. Given the predominance of female users, the website’s design choices, such as layout, colour palette, typography, and visual elements, will be tailored to reflect preferences that research has shown to appeal more to female audiences. This may include using softer colour schemes, clean and balanced layouts, and visuals that emphasize connection, inclusivity, and aesthetic appeal. Additionally, features and navigation structures will be developed to ensure accessibility, clarity, and ease of use, aligning with design trends that prioritise intuitive user journeys. Overall, the gender distribution of the survey respondents highlights the importance of creating a design that resonates with female users, ensuring that their needs and preferences are central to every aspect of the website’s development.

The survey results show that the majority of respondents were young people, with 52.5% aged 16–17 and 42.5% aged 14–15, while only 5% were aged 45 and above. This indicates that the main audience for the website will be teenagers, so the design should reflect their preferences, habits, and digital expectations. The website should therefore use modern and engaging visual elements such as bold colours, interactive graphics, and clean layouts that feel current and energetic. The language should be casual, inclusive, and easy to understand, avoiding overly formal or technical terms to maintain accessibility and interest. Visuals should represent diversity and youth culture, using relatable imagery that reflects community, connection, and individuality. Navigation should be intuitive and mobile-friendly, as this age group primarily accesses content on phones. Since only a small proportion of older users are represented, the site can still maintain readability and professionalism but prioritise a youth-centred aesthetic that appeals to the dominant teenage demographic while remaining welcoming to all.

From the survey conducted across the year level, the results provided valuable insights into how an online thrift store marketplace like Swopped could benefit the community. The survey question asking how often individuals shop online revealed that 32.5% of respondents shop online monthly or yearly, while 30% stated they never shop online and only 2.5% shop daily or weekly. These results indicate that although online shopping is convenient, there are still barriers preventing many people from engaging with it regularly. Common challenges include delivery fees and the inability to try on clothes before purchasing, which can lead to uncertainty about sizing and fit. Swopped aims to address these concerns by turning them into key advantages offering accurate size visualisation based on user measurements to improve confidence in fit and ensuring affordability by pricing all second-hand items, including delivery, at or below typical in-store prices. By removing these common deterrents, Swopped not only encourages more people to explore online shopping but also strengthens accessibility and sustainability within the community.

Beneficiare Feedback - What percentage of your Clothes is second Hand ?

The survey conducted across the year level revealed that secondhand clothing is not yet a major staple in many students’ wardrobes. Results showed that 45% of participants said only 10–20% of their clothes were secondhand, while 20% reported having 0% secondhand items. In contrast, only 17.5% indicated that 50–60% of their clothing was secondhand, and just 10% said that 70–80% of their wardrobe consisted of reused items. These findings highlight that most individuals do not immediately turn to secondhand shopping. The reasons for this vary, including the unpredictability of stock, the fact that most secondhand stores are physical (requiring time and effort to visit), and the inconsistency of sizing across brands, where a size 8 in one brand can differ greatly from another. Other factors such as convenience, accessibility, and style availability also influence purchasing decisions. Swopped aims to directly address these challenges by creating an online marketplace that makes secondhand shopping more accessible, consistent, and convenient. This data reinforces the need for such a platform and supports Swopped’s goal to reshape perceptions of secondhand shopping by removing the barriers that currently discourage consumers.

The survey conducted across the year level clearly highlighted a significant gap in the online secondhand fashion market. When analysing the results, it was found that 72.5% of respondents reported that 0% of their secondhand clothing was purchased online, while only 15% indicated that 10–20% of their secondhand items were bought through online platforms. This data shows that while students actively engage in secondhand shopping, most still rely on in-person stores such as Salvos and Vinnies rather than online options. Existing platforms like Depop, Facebook Marketplace, and eBay offer some access, but they often lack localised options and consistency in quality or price. Recognising this gap, Swopped aims to innovate sustainable fashion by creating a centralised catalogue that connects individuals to nearby op shops and secondhand retailers within their community. Additionally, Swopped partners with brands to sell discounted or end-of-season stock online, promoting affordability and sustainability while strengthening local circular fashion networks.

The results from the source survey conducted among the year level show that the majority of participants prioritised style when choosing secondhand clothing, with 84.6% identifying it as their main consideration, followed by price and condition, both at 76.9%. This clearly indicates that while affordability and quality still matter, the visual appeal and trend alignment of items play the most significant role in decision-making. These findings will directly shape the structure and design of the website by ensuring that the most valued elements such as style and aesthetic presentation are positioned at the forefront. Tabs and filters related to style (e.g., colour, fit, and trend categories) will therefore be placed in more accessible and visible areas of the website, while features of lower importance to users will be secondary. By aligning the site’s navigation and visual hierarchy with these preferences, the platform will better meet user expectations and enhance overall usability for its target audience.

From the survey conducted among the year level, results showed that 63.2% of individuals preferred a grid view for shopping, while 15% favoured a large image-focused and minimalist style, and only 5.2% preferred a list view. These findings clearly indicate that most users value visual organisation, balance, and accessibility when browsing products. The preference for a grid view suggests that the website design should prioritise a structured layout that displays multiple items at once, allowing users to easily compare products through clear thumbnails, consistent sizing, and short product descriptions. The secondary preference for a large image and minimalist interface implies that visual appeal and simplicity are also key encouraging the use of clean spacing, limited colour palettes, and strong product imagery to maintain engagement. The low interest in a list view indicates that text-heavy layouts may be less effective for this audience. Together, these insights will guide both the design through the adoption of a grid-based, image-driven interface and the functional components, such as hover effects, quick-view pop-ups, and responsive scaling, to ensure a visually cohesive, efficient, and user-friendly shopping experience.

Through conducting the survey across my year level and during my mentoring sessions, I learned that apps often operate under different pricing models, such as freemium and premium, which made it important for me to understand what features users would be willing to pay for. The survey results revealed that 29.8% of participants would pay extra for faster shipping and 26.3% would pay for exclusive discounts. These insights guided me to consider which features within my app could hold the most value to users. As a result, my app will include a range of unique features, such as the ability to reserve items since op shop clothing is often one of a kind and the option to visualise clothes on custom avatars, alongside a no-ad experience. Survey data revealed that 30.8% of respondents preferred a lighter theme, while 23.1% favoured a darker one, highlighting a clear division in user expectations. To accommodate this and ensure the interface appeals to a broader audience, I decided to incorporate a balanced combination of both light and dark shades within the app’s palette.
Strategically choosing skill to practise for element development

Earlier this year, I won the Unley Council Fish Tank Entrepreneur Competition with my concept Swopped, an online thrift store marketplace created to make secondhand fashion more convenient, accessible, and appealing to a broader audience. This experience was deeply meaningful to me as it allowed me to take an idea I was passionate about, reducing fashion waste and promoting sustainable shopping, and transform it into a tangible business concept. Winning the competition not only validated my idea but also highlighted the importance of understanding how to adapt, improve, and grow through feedback from others. Because of this, I decided to incorporate Swopped into my EIF project by focusing on the element of generating feedback loops. I recognised that consistently collecting, analysing, and acting on feedback is crucial for any successful innovation. In the context of Swopped, this includes feedback from two key groups: the customers, such as secondhand stores or op shops that would use the platform to sell items, and the beneficiaries, who are the individuals buying and using the app. Each group provides valuable insights that can shape the platform’s usability, features, and overall experience. Feedback loops are at the heart of every design and development process, particularly in digital platforms like apps and websites. They ensure that creators remain responsive to user needs, detect problems early, and continuously refine their ideas. By embedding this skill into my EIF, I am not only enhancing my entrepreneurial capabilities but also learning to apply a structured cycle of improvement to my passion project. This approach will help me evolve Swopped from a concept into a user-centred, functional prototype that truly meets the needs of its community and contributes to more sustainable fashion practices.

NTENTION

Which Capability Element feels most important to me right now?
The capability element that feels most important to me right now is generating effective feedback loops. This skill will help me actively listen, analyse, and act on feedback to continuously improve my business idea, Swopped.

What situations have shown me I could improve here?
During early concept development for Swopped, I realised that while I had strong ideas, I often relied too much on my own perspective. When I shared my concept at the Unley Council Fish Tank Competition, I received valuable feedback that transformed my design. This showed me that structured feedback processes lead to better outcomes and that I could improve by seeking and applying feedback more deliberately and consistently.

Where in my life (school, friendships, community) would this make a difference?
Developing this skill would make a difference in my school projects, business development, and community involvement. In each of these areas, strong feedback loops help refine teamwork, communication, and outcomes. For Swopped, it will improve how I collaborate with op shops, customers, and app developers to meet real needs. If successful, I will create an app that would significantly help society environmentally and sustainably by making second-hand shopping accessible and convenient

“…developing this element would be meaningful for me because…”
Developing this element would be meaningful for me because I do not just want to be reflective; I want to understand, apply, and act on feedback to create a continuous cycle of growth and improvement. This capability will allow me to transform Swopped from a concept into a user-centred, sustainable online thrift marketplace.

How would growing this capability help me handle challenges?
Growing this capability would help me handle challenges by teaching me to see feedback as an opportunity rather than criticism. It will give me tools to adapt, iterate, and improve my designs or business ideas based on evidence rather than assumption.

How might this make me feel more confident, independent, or fair?
It would make me more confident and independent because I would base my decisions on clear data and user responses. It also makes me fairer by ensuring that the needs and voices of both customers and beneficiaries shape the direction of my project.

Could this help me make better decisions or be a better friend, teammate, or citizen?
Yes, this skill encourages open-mindedness and empathy. By valuing and applying feedback, I can make better decisions, communicate more clearly with teammates, and contribute more effectively to my community projects.

“To support growth in this element, I plan to develop the skill of…”
To support growth in this element, I plan to develop the skill of collecting, analysing, and applying feedback systematically through cycles of prototyping and reflection.

What skill could I practise every week to strengthen this capability?
Each week, I will practise gathering feedback from different groups such as clients, users, and peers and then make small updates to my app concept based on what I learn.

What do people who are strong in this element do really well?
People who are strong in this element listen actively, analyse feedback objectively, and act on it without taking it personally. They use feedback to guide innovation and improvement in a structured way.

Is there a skill I could try, reflect on, and improve over time?
Yes, I will focus on improving how I interpret and implement feedback through regular brainstorming, journaling, and testing new prototypes of Swopped.

MILESTONE

By the beginning of Term 4, I aim to…
Complete at least two rounds of prototyping for Swopped, incorporating and acting on feedback received from beneficiaries and clients.

What concrete outcome will show I’ve grown in this capability?
A more refined prototype of Swopped that clearly reflects user needs and demonstrates design improvements based on collected feedback.

Could I create or lead something that demonstrates this skill?
Yes, I will lead client and user feedback sessions, surveys, and brainstorming workshops to collect real input that informs my business development.

Is there a challenge I could tackle or a role I could step into?
I could take on the role of project leader in developing Swopped, coordinating user research, feedback analysis, and prototype updates.

What could I produce, organise, or participate in that would prove my progress?
I will produce a working prototype and a feedback log that tracks how I’ve implemented suggestions to improve accessibility and usability.

How will others be able to see the difference in what I can do?
Others will see clearer, user-centred improvements in Swopped’s interface and structure, as well as a more confident, evidence-based approach to development.

PRACTICE

Visible – How can I make my goal visible and trackable?
I will include client persona diagrams, progress decks, and updates in my journal. I will also use my planner and a digital tracker to monitor how often I collect and act on feedback.

Attractive – How can I make this practice enjoyable?
I will design feedback forms and brainstorming templates using aesthetic Canva layouts to make the process creative and visually engaging. I can also share progress with friends for encouragement.

Easy – How can I make it manageable?
I will schedule two to three short brainstorming sessions per week and organise all tasks using a weekly planner and Padlet posts. This keeps feedback collection consistent but achievable.

Satisfying – How will I reward myself and see progress?
Each time I apply feedback successfully, I will sketch or visually update part of the Swopped prototype to bring my project to life. Seeing tangible progress will motivate me to continue refining my idea.

ANTICIPATE OBSTACLES

If (things that could get in my way…)
If shops or clients are not responding or providing insight, or if schedules and availability do not align…

Then I will…

Explore alternative contact methods such as email or social media outreach.

Use online surveys or feedback forms (e.g., Google Forms) to gather insights digitally.
This ensures that I can continue collecting valuable information and maintain consistent feedback loops regardless of obstacles.

CHECK-IN PLAN

By Check-in One, I plan to…
Conduct two client brainstorms and two beneficiary brainstorms to collect early insights. This will help identify what users and sellers most value in an online thrift store.

By Check-in Two, I plan to…
Send out a structured Google Form to gather more detailed feedback that will guide the design and layout of the Swopped app.

By Check-in Three, I plan to…
Develop and test a prototype website designed in response to all collected feedback, showcasing clear evidence of applied user input and iteration.

TRANSFER

At the end, I will show my growth by…
Creating a working prototype of Swopped that demonstrates how effective feedback loops can refine and enhance a business idea.

What can I create, do, or share that proves I’ve strengthened this capability?
I will produce a portfolio showing my feedback process surveys, responses, design updates, and reflections to illustrate how user insights shaped the final product.

Could I write a reflection, present my journey, or showcase something I’ve produced?
Yes, I will present my Swopped journey, showing before-and-after versions of designs and explaining how feedback guided each improvement.

Could I demonstrate my skill in a real-world situation?
I will demonstrate this capability by launching a community-based testing round for Swopped, where users can try the prototype and offer feedback directly.

Who could I share this with?
I can share my final product and process with my class, teachers, family, and the Unley Council entrepreneurship community.

How will this skill continue to help me beyond this project or term?
Generating effective feedback loops will continue to help me as both a future entrepreneur and an aspiring anaesthetist. In both roles, I will need to communicate, reflect, and continuously improve based on feedback from colleagues, patients, or users.

You could maybe consider how feedback from other perspectives could have shaped your website design differently. I saw your progress in designing your website based on feedback from year 10 perspectives, however you could consider whether applying feedback from other perspectives would change your views on tailoring your website to other areas of interest. Also, how has this experience helped you grow in your capability of 'generating feedback loops'? Do you feel you have been effectively transfering evidence of that feedback into your skill development, and what are the effects you could see in your product? (do you think it benefits from the feedback, or does it need more progress?)

Defining My Goal

My main goal is to strengthen my ability to generate and apply effective feedback loops for my business concept, Swopped an online platform designed to make second-hand shopping more convenient and community-driven.

To achieve this, I plan to conduct two client brainstorm sessions and two beneficiary brainstorm sessions. These sessions will allow me to gain insight from both key perspectives:

Clients: such as local charity and op shops that would provide clothing for the platform.

Beneficiaries: including individuals who want to buy affordable, sustainable fashion online.

Each brainstorm will focus on understanding their needs, motivations, and frustrations so that I can design a business model that benefits both groups. In addition, I will potentially create a Business Model Canvas to visually map the relationships between customers, value propositions, resources, and channels. This will help me refine Swopped’s structure and ensure that every decision I make is supported by evidence and feedback.

To collect meaningful evidence, I will:

Record photographic evidence of each brainstorm, whether completed on paper or through digital tools like Miro or Canva.

Document all resources used during the process, such as feedback templates, brainstorming frameworks, and examples of business model canvases.

Evaluate the contents of each brainstorm by analysing the ideas generated and identifying which insights are most relevant to improving Swopped.

Reflect on how I plan to apply these insights to shape future iterations of the business idea.

This evidence will demonstrate my growing understanding of how to gather, interpret, and act upon feedback to make informed design and business decisions.

Judging and Feedback

To measure my progress, I plan to share my work with my accountability buddies. These peers will play an important role in helping me judge the effectiveness of my feedback loops and provide a different perspective on how I collect and respond to input.

I will present the progress I’ve made in developing my feedback systems, focusing on how I’ve learned to identify my target feedback sources distinguishing between clients (e.g., op shops and thrift store managers) and beneficiaries (e.g., customers seeking affordable, sustainable fashion). I will explain how I tailor my approach for each group, ensuring that the feedback I receive is relevant and actionable.

My school accountability buddy will then review my brainstorm outcomes and give me critical feedback on:

The clarity and focus of my feedback questions.

How effectively I’ve translated feedback into improvements for Swopped.

Whether my feedback process is inclusive and considers different user perspectives.

This external evaluation will help me identify blind spots and refine my feedback methods. By doing so, I aim to develop a stronger understanding of how to build feedback loops that are continuous, meaningful, and growth-oriented. Ultimately, this process will guide me in transforming Swopped from an initial idea into a user-informed, community-focused business concept.

Defining My Goal

My goal is to construct a feedback survey for my year level to guide the design and functionality of the Swopped website, and to email different op shops to explore potential partnerships and determine if the app concept would be beneficial to them. This process will help me gather both user and industry perspectives to shape a more inclusive and effective business model.

To achieve this, I will create targeted survey questions that collect data on shopping preferences, habits, and accessibility needs, as well as feedback on desired features for a sustainable clothing app. The aim is to design the app not based solely on my assumptions but through evidence-based feedback from the people who will actually use it. Additionally, contacting op shops will provide insight into how Swopped could support their operations, attract customers, and promote circular fashion.

To collect meaningful evidence, I will:

Record screenshots of the Google Form and survey setup process.

Document all resources used, including drafts of survey questions and copies of the partnership emails sent to op shops.

Reflect on how the collected data and responses from both students and shops will influence the design, accessibility, and core functions of the app.

This evidence will demonstrate my growing ability to gather, interpret, and apply feedback to make informed design and business decisions. It will also show how I am learning to collaborate with stakeholders and transform feedback into meaningful action.

Judging and Feedback

To measure my progress, I will share my work with my accountability buddies, who will help assess the effectiveness of my feedback systems and provide diverse perspectives on how I collect, interpret, and act on input.

I will present my survey design, email outreach, and the results gathered, focusing on how I have developed the ability to:

Identify appropriate and targeted feedback sources.

Construct well-structured, purposeful questions for qualitative feedback.

Translate insights into specific improvements for Swopped.

My school accountability buddy will review my survey outcomes and provide feedback on:

The clarity and focus of my survey and email communication.

How effectively I have integrated feedback into the evolving design of Swopped.

Whether my process considers different user experiences and community needs.

This external evaluation will help me identify blind spots, refine my feedback methods, and ensure my approach is inclusive and evidence-driven.

My Question:
Do you think a Google Form is the best way to engage in feedback with my peers to help guide the design of my app?

Accountability Buddy Response:
Using a Google Form is a great starting point for collecting feedback, especially in the early stages of your app design. It allows you to easily reach a large number of peers, gather both quantitative (multiple-choice) and qualitative (short-answer) responses, and analyse trends efficiently. However, as your project develops, you could explore other ways to collect feedback that provide richer and more interactive insights.

For example, you could Hold in-person focus groups where your target users test the app and discuss their experiences. Run informal feedback sessions during class or breaks, allowing real-time discussion and clarifications. Conduct user interviews to get deeper insights into user needs, challenges, and preferences. Use online discussion platforms or polls (like Padlet or Mentimeter) to gather quick reactions. Create a prototype testing session where users can give live feedback while interacting with the app.

Accountability Buddy Question:
When constructing your Google Form, how will you make sure it is engaging and encourages responses? Are there any ways you plan to change how you collect feedback from students compared to how you engage with companies?

My Response:
To make my Google Form engaging, I plan to use clear and simple language that my peers can easily understand. I’ll also include emojis and short, relatable vocabulary to make the questions feel friendly and inviting. The form will include a mix of question types such as multiple-choice, rating scales, and open-ended questions to keep participants interested and allow for both quick and detailed responses. To ensure the questions are relevant, I’ll focus on aspects of the app that matter most to students, like design appeal, usability, and whether the app meets their needs. I’ll also keep the form visually appealing by using colour and spacing effectively to avoid overwhelming the user.

Compared to how I collected feedback from the company where I used a more traditional format with a structured list of questions I plan to make my peer feedback process more interactive and creative. This includes using visual elements, informal tone, and opportunities for follow-up discussions to encourage genuine and useful feedback

My Question:
Do you think I have been able to transfer the feedback from the year level to the website effectively, or have there been aspects that I haven’t fully taken into account in my feedback loop?

Accountability Buddy Response:
I think you’ve done well applying the feedback you gathered from the Year 10 group, especially since your website clearly reflects their interests and shopping habits. However, it might be valuable to expand your feedback collection to include other year levels or even teachers and parents. This could help you gain a broader understanding of different shopping preferences and make your website more inclusive and user-friendly for a wider audience.

Accountability Buddy Question:
Annie – I noticed that when you sourced your feedback, you only sent it to the GIHS Year 10s. A possible improvement could be sharing it with a wider audience to receive more diverse feedback across all age groups.
Sophia – If you were to go back and change something about your process in skill development, what would you change or adapt, and why? Would this change influence your progress or where you are at now?

My Response:
That’s a really good point! I started by collecting feedback from Year 10s because I knew that a lot of students our age regularly shop online, so it made sense to design the website around their preferences first. But I agree that expanding my feedback loop to include different age groups could give me more diverse insights. I plan to create additional Google Forms targeted at other year levels and possibly adults to understand their online shopping habits and what features they would value most. This will help me refine my website so it’s more inclusive and appeals to a wider range of users with different shopping preferences. By broadening my feedback sources, I’ll also strengthen my ability to apply feedback effectively and make my final product more well-rounded.

Here, I have created prototype displays for the different pages of the website, ensuring that each design reflects both functionality and visual appeal. For the login page, I designed it to include engaging graphics and a subtle animation featuring different clothing items displayed on a phone screen, representing a simple and inviting version of the app. This visual element helps convey the purpose of the platform while maintaining a modern and appealing aesthetic. The page layout is kept clean and intuitive, with clearly labelled options to log in or sign up, allowing users to navigate the process quickly and without confusion. To make the page more visually engaging while still user-friendly, I used a colour palette consisting of various shades of pink and orange, inspired by the beneficiary feedback form. These colours were chosen not only for their vibrant and welcoming appearance but also to create a sense of consistency and brand identity across the platform. Overall, the prototype design balances simplicity and creativity, ensuring that the login page is both functional and visually appealing to users.

The majority of individuals who completed the feedback form voted that the first page users should see after logging in ought to be a “Recommended for You” page. Based on this feedback, I created a demo version of this page to reflect their preferences and expectations. In this prototype, the clothing items are displayed in a grid view, which was specifically requested by respondents for its organised and visually appealing layout. Each item includes a clear size indication, with different sizes represented by different colours, making it easy for users to identify availability at a glance. Additionally, there is an option to click on specific sizes to filter items according to preference, enhancing convenience and customisation. At the top of the page, a price scale allows individuals to adjust their preferred price range quickly, giving them greater control over their browsing experience. Key interactive buttons such as the cart, account, and wishlist icons are also placed at the top to provide easy access to essential features. On the left-hand side, a dropdown menu contributes to a sleek and modern visual style while offering well-organised navigation options for exploring different product categories. There is also a direct link to the main categories home page, ensuring smooth and intuitive site navigation. Overall, this design effectively integrates user feedback to create a practical, aesthetically pleasing, and user-focused “Recommended for You” page that enhances engagement and usability.

Individuals who provided feedback expressed a clear preference for a simple grid view display for the categories home page, emphasising the importance of clarity, organisation, and visual appeal. In response to this, I designed the categories page so that each category is presented as its own distinct button, featuring a clean icon that visually represents the category alongside a clear title. This layout keeps the design sleek and easy to navigate, aligning with the simplicity that users wanted. The minimal structure ensures that users can quickly locate and access the section they are interested in without unnecessary distractions or clutter. To enhance the overall visual aesthetic, I incorporated a burgundy button design paired with light orange accents, creating a pleasing contrast that draws attention to key interactive elements. The soft pink background helps to unify these colours, creating a warm and cohesive look that maintains consistency with the rest of the website’s theme. This combination of simplicity, effective colour contrast, and intuitive organisation reflects the feedback gathered, resulting in a categories home page that is both user-friendly and visually engaging.

A key feature I wanted to include in the app is giving people the option to search for op shops near them, making it easier to find local secondhand stores without having to leave the platform. To achieve this, each op shop was assigned a different colour, allowing users to easily distinguish between various stores within their area. When an individual searches for op shops nearby, icons representing these stores appear on the map in their designated colours, instantly making the different locations visible and easy to identify. This feature helps users locate specific shops more efficiently and removes the need to open Google Maps, where the abundance of unrelated stores can often cause confusion and make it difficult to focus on op shops alone. By grouping all the op shops together in one interactive map view and using distinct colours to represent each store, the design provides a clear, organised, and visually intuitive experience. This not only enhances convenience for users but also strengthens the app’s goal of promoting secondhand shopping by making local op shops more accessible and visually engaging.

Another page that individuals wanted to see, based on the feedback collected, was a “Trending” page that showcases popular and in-demand clothing items. In response to this, I constructed a visually pleasing and well-organised trending page that effectively highlights current fashion trends while maintaining an intuitive and engaging layout. The design groups trending clothing items into clear sections such as “Trending Tops,” “Trending Pants,” and “Trending Accessories,” ensuring that users can easily browse by category without feeling overwhelmed. Each section is arranged in a grid format to maintain consistency with the rest of the website’s design, offering a clean and balanced look that aligns with user preferences for simplicity and organisation. The visual presentation combines appealing imagery with consistent spacing and typography, creating a sense of cohesion throughout the page. This approach not only enhances the overall aesthetic but also improves usability by helping users quickly identify items that match their interests. The trending page, therefore, serves as both an inspirational and functional feature, encouraging users to explore current styles while maintaining the polished, user-friendly feel that the feedback emphasised.

Op SHop Feedback Loop / Challenges & Improvements

To develop my app idea further, I reached out to various op shops, including Vinnies, Salvos, the Red Cross, and Save the Children, to ask whether my app could be of potential interest for a future partnership aimed at making shopping at their stores more accessible and convenient. After waiting for a response, I unfortunately did not receive any emails back from these organisations. This was a challenge, as the op shops are my primary clients, and receiving their feedback is an essential part of shaping both the design and overall purpose of my app. To overcome this setback, I took time to reflect on why I might not have received a response. I realised that my email was overly long and repetitive, and it lacked a clear, specific question for them to answer. This made it quite broad and ambiguous, and the structure did not make it easy for them to engage with. From identifying these issues, I recognised the importance of creating more effective and purposeful feedback loops. As a result, I decided to redesign my approach to gathering feedback by creating a simple, engaging, and visually appealing Google Form for my beneficiaries. This form included clear and concise questions to collect meaningful insights that could be directly applied to improve my prototype and ensure it better meets the needs of both users and partnering op shops.

Through my mentoring session with Form Fish Tank, I was able to flesh out and refine several key aspects of my business before beginning to develop and collect feedback loops. During this session, I was introduced to a range of foundational routines and strategies that helped me structure my ideas more effectively. This included applying divergent and convergent thinking routines, using divergent thinking to explore a wide range of possibilities and creative directions for my app, and convergent thinking to narrow these ideas down into practical and achievable solutions. One of the major insights that emerged from this mentoring session was the importance of not limiting my app solely to op shops. Instead, we explored the potential to expand the platform into related areas such as a second-hand school uniform marketplace and discounted brand items, which could broaden its user base and increase accessibility. The notes I took during this process helped me gain a deeper understanding of my company’s structure and purpose. I began to think more critically about elements such as operating within a two-sided marketplace, balancing the needs of both sellers (for example, op shops or individual users) and buyers. Additionally, we discussed the importance of conducting market testing and running focus groups to collect authentic insights from potential users before finalising any design decisions. Overall, this mentoring session provided me with the clarity and strategic direction needed to move forward with confidence in developing my app idea.

Evaluating the Value Proposition Canvas Manual

After my mentoring session, I used the Value Proposition Canvas instruction manual to help guide the next stage of my project, designing a targeted feedback loop that would generate meaningful and actionable insights. By working through the booklet, I was able to evaluate each section and understand how it could shape the questions I included in my feedback form. The first section, focusing on Customer Segments, encouraged me to clearly define who my users and beneficiaries are. This helped me think deeply about the different groups that would interact with my app, such as op shops, second-hand clothing buyers, and potential school uniform sellers. Understanding their specific needs and motivations allowed me to tailor my questions to explore their experiences and challenges more directly. The second section, the Value Proposition, guided me to identify what value my app provides and how it solves problems or creates benefits for users. This helped me ensure my feedback questions were focused on whether users saw value in the features I was designing and if those features genuinely met their needs. The third section, covering Customer Jobs, Pains, and Gains, was particularly useful for developing empathy-driven questions. It helped me think about the daily struggles users face when shopping second-hand and what improvements they would appreciate most. The fourth section, which focused on the Product and Service Fit, encouraged me to evaluate how well my app’s features aligned with user expectations and whether the design effectively addressed the key problems identified earlier. Lastly, the Gain Creators and Pain Relievers section prompted me to refine questions that assessed which parts of my app made the process of buying or selling second-hand items easier, cheaper, or more enjoyable. Overall, analysing and applying the Value Proposition Canvas gave me a structured framework for creating purposeful and well-targeted feedback questions, ensuring that every response would help improve my app’s design, accessibility, and overall value to its users.

Buisness Development Prinicples

reviewed the ten Business Development Principles and used them to shape how I would generate more purposeful and targeted feedback loops for my app. Principle 1: The Customer Must Be Paramount reminded me to design feedback questions that focus entirely on user needs and real experiences rather than my assumptions, ensuring that every question directly addressed the problems or barriers customers faced when shopping second-hand. Principle 2: Systemize the Business encouraged me to create a consistent and repeatable structure for collecting and analysing feedback by standardising how I organised responses through clear categories, tagging methods, and templates, allowing insights to be tracked and compared over time. Principle 3: Deliver Full Spectrum Value helped me recognise that the app should not only meet functional needs but also provide emotional and social value, shaping my questions to explore whether users found the app trustworthy, community-driven, and inclusive, rather than just convenient. Principle 4: The 80/20 Rule reminded me to prioritise what would have the greatest impact, leading me to focus feedback on the 20% of features and audiences that would generate 80% of the value, such as the listing and purchasing processes. Principle 5: Apply Principles, Not Formulas encouraged flexibility in my feedback design, pushing me to build questions around clarity, empathy, and relevance instead of relying on generic templates so that I could continuously adapt them based on user responses. Principle 6: Think With Your Whole Mind made me realise the importance of combining logic and creativity by including both quantitative questions, such as rating scales, and qualitative prompts that allowed users to share their experiences and ideas in more depth. Principle 7: Define Success helped me clearly identify what I wanted to achieve from each feedback loop, such as testing user demand, identifying navigation barriers, or validating pricing strategies, which made the data I collected more targeted and actionable. Principle 8: Focus on Results (Goal → Work → Results → Success) reminded me to link every question to a specific purpose and outcome, ensuring that all feedback led to measurable improvements rather than simply gathering information. Principle 9: Use Your Double Vision encouraged me to consider both short-term usability feedback and long-term opportunities for future partnerships or app expansions, allowing a balance between immediate improvement and strategic growth. Finally, Principle 10: Keep a Healthy Perspective taught me to interpret all feedback constructively and view negative responses as valuable opportunities for refinement rather than setbacks. By applying and evaluating all ten principles, I was able to transform my feedback loops from basic surveys into a strategic, structured, and user-centred process that supports continuous growth and meaningful innovation for my app.

Based on the feedback received, I constructed a prototype to visually display the website, ensuring that it reflects the preferences and needs of potential users. The prototype demonstrates the layout, colour scheme, navigation, and key features in a clear and engaging way, allowing users to see how the different pages, such as the login, recommended, categories, and trending pages, interconnect. By incorporating elements like grid views, organised sections, and intuitive navigation, the prototype provides a realistic preview of the website’s functionality while highlighting the design choices informed directly by user feedback.

Final Reflection & Next Steps

My overall reflection on this project highlights the importance of effectively generating feedback loops to inform and improve my website design. My initial goal was to develop these feedback loops by first gaining a deep understanding of clients versus beneficiaries and then collecting input from both groups. However, after sending numerous emails, I did not receive responses from the op shops or customers. This lack of engagement made me rethink my approach to asking for feedback and consider more effective ways to gather input. I realised that visually simple, well-organised, and direct questions work better, as the original questions for the op shops were more like statements rather than clear, actionable prompts. Applying these lessons, I created a straightforward Google Form for my customers, which proved successful and provided many insightful and useful responses. This step was integral to my development process, as it demonstrated how effectively designed feedback loops can generate actionable insights. I then applied the beneficiary feedback to construct a visual prototype of my website, allowing me to translate user preferences into a tangible design.

For next steps, I plan to generate more feedback loops, including gathering input from a more diverse cohort in terms of age, shopping preferences, and beyond the school community, to further refine my website design. I also intend to use what I have learned about constructing effective feedback loops to attempt receiving input from the op shops again, possibly by using a Google Form based on the success of the beneficiary survey. Additionally, I want to explore new and innovative methods for generating feedback loops to continuously improve the website and ensure that it meets the needs and expectations of all users.
