The Ottoman Empire had a very complex form of government. It was ruled over by a sultan and formed a bureaucracy where officials all became appointed via their own talents and prospects, traditionally called a meritocracy. One example of a Sultan is the great Suleyman I, who had conquered several areas such as Egypt, Mesopotamia, and North Africa. He also aided in the development of a strong legal code that was based on Islamic law.

The Ottoman Empire had corrupt rulers who were not well educated since the power was passed down male members of the family. They one had one good ruler who they called "Suleyman the Magnificent" the only problem was they depended on him to much and after his death the empire grew weak. They lost battles and were not able to recover from them. They also lost control of trade routes. The loss of trade routes was another great contribution to their decline since it reduced the Ottoman's revenue leading to economic problems.

They used citizens (men/boys) of conquered countries to strengthen their military. The military took control of Constantinople and renamed it Istanbul. During the time of the conquering of Constantinople, Mehmet II was the leader, but Suleyman the great was the glue to the rising of the Ottoman military and empire. Once he died the military fell apart as well as other things.

The Ottoman Empire had many flourishing trade routes. They conquered many trade established cities. These cities were doing well in trade when they were conquered by the Ottoman Empire, and the Ottoman Empire made the trade routes of the conquered cities their own. One place that is commonly known today is Istanbul. Istanbul was originally Constantinople, but Mehmet II the conquered it and changed the name to Istanbul. Once they conquered Istanbul, the Ottomans developed a huge trading network. The Ottomans also linked the two trading world's of Asia and Europe, all the while trading in parts of Africa.

SImilar to their Mongol counterparts, the Ottoman Empire was a culturally diverse place, giving those they had conquered the option to continue practicing their own religion. However, there was an exception to this acceptance. The Ottomans were not accepting of one religion and its people in particular; Shi'ah Muslims.Them also being of the Islamic faith, felt it disrespectful as well as rebelious towards that faith. Because of this sentiment, those who were found practicing this were very often persecuted.
