The League of Nations - Sara Finley

Germany’s Kaiser was kicked out and replaced in a revolution in November 1918. President of United States wanted a more tolerant treaty that would have given the German democracy more strength and made conditions more likely to keep peace. Although France and Britain wanted to weaken Germany in an act of revenge for their losses. The Treaty of Versailles caused great unpleasantness in Germany, but one hope for peace was the formation of the League of Nations. This was the idea of Wilson’s, it held a vow as a guardian of world peace. The League’s objective was to prevent war. The Covenant of the League was allowed by the Versailles Conference in 1919. Firstly, the League had 42 member states and consisted of a General Assembly and a Council (assembly met annually, council met more frequently to deal with urgencies). This consisted of Permanent Members and Non-Permanent Members. The major powers being Britain, France, Italy and Japan were the Permanent members and Non-Permanent members were elected. The League’s Mandates Commission was created to guarantee the administering powers did their job. The league never prevented war although it could ask parties to negotiate during an Assembly. Another weakness was that important countries did not become League members.
