Cyrene offers us two magnificent examples both of Greek culture dating back to 632 BC and also Roman culture from around 74 BC. It was not until 365 AD when it was an enormous earthquake that destroyed the village.

The magnificent ruins of the Zeus Temple shows us the Greek influence and it is matched in its beauty by the impressive amphitheater. Other ruins you can expect to see at this phenomal site are statues of gods and goddesses as well as intricate tombs.

According to the Encylopedia britannica the people of Cyrene were exceptional scholars, they had a medical school and encouraged politics and famous philosophers such as Aristippus made his name here.

Source : Cyrene, Ancient Greek Colony, Libya, Britannica, Accessed August 19, 2016 https://www.britannica.com/place/Cyrene-ancient-Greek-colony-Libya

Source: Archaeological site of Cyrene- Libya, African World Heritage Sites, Accessed August 19 2016 http://www.africanworldheritagesites.org/cultural-places/frontiers-of-the-roman-empire/cyrene.html

As with most Greek culture there is a deep rooted history of folklore and legend. Cyrene although in Africa, was created as an overflow to the Greek island Thera ( known now as Santorini) which is how the city originated. The name Cyrene is the Roman version of the cities original name which was named in honor of the Kyrene the huntress daughter of Hypseus and a water nymph whom Apollo fell in love with.

Source Violatti, Cristian, "Cyrene" Ancient History Encylopedia, Accessed August 13 2016 http://www.ancient.eu/cyrene/
