My Growing Up Experience - by Mr Eddy

When I was young, I was inspired by many professions or jobs. I was fascinated by astronauts as they travelled the unknowns of space. I was intrigued by scientists who discovered new medicines. I wanted to become a pilot to fly a plane to discover new countries. I also thought about becoming a writer, who writes stories and music for people to enjoy.

As I grew up, I was told that I could not become all those people whom I wanted to be. I had to set my goal one just one type of profession and I was reminded that I had to work very hard for it.

One day, my English Language teacher gave us a writing assignment where we had to write about our goals. In class, I decided to write about my goal to become a professor who created potions to cure all forms of illnesses. In my mind, I wanted to help people who were sick so that they could get well and be happy. However, my teacher scolded me and told me that I could never be a professor because that there was no such profession. There was no such thing as a professor.

Disappointed, I set my goal onto something else - to become a singer. While my Music teacher had always praised me for singing well during her lessons, of course, I realised that being a singer in Singapore would not be easy.

Eventually, I turned my goal into something that was more manageable for me keep track. I decided that I should pass all national examinations with flying colours, go to the University and make my family (and myself) proud.
