What is a Nuffield Research Placement

When? – During summer holidays after S5 (Scotland).

How long? – 4-6 weeks in total. This includes independent study ahead of 2-3 weeks for the real-world placement collaboration activities.

What? – A well-supervised but independent placement relating to an area of science, quantitative social science, computing, technology, engineering or maths - or a combination!

Cost? – You can take part in a placement at no cost. Travel costs are reimbursed and you may also be eligible to receive a £200 subsidy.

Where? – Placements take place in a variety of locations including offices, museums, research centres, laboratories or fieldwork settings.

Job Overview From day one you will be adding real value to our business within our Finance department while also starting your studies with Robert Gordon University (RGU).

This 5-year programme will ensure you have the best possible start in your finance career and your journey to becoming a Chartered Accountant.

The role will include assisting in various activities, one day you could be ensuring financial reporting is accurate and delivered on time, and on another day supporting an ad-hoc finance project as directed by the team. Tasks like preparing forecasts, performing reconciliations, and investigating variances may sound daunting now, but once you learn these skills, they’ll become second nature. What can you expect from your apprenticeship?

The 5-year apprenticeship route offers you to train, study and achieve a Bachelor of Arts Honours Degree, in partnership with Robert Gordon University (RGU) and undertake the Chartered Accountant qualification via the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Scotland (ICAS).

You will use what you learn as part of your studies to contribute to assisting the finance team in their delivery as a support function and help solve business challenges. You will be given all necessary training and guidance for all activities and be able to build relationships across all the functions while gaining knowledge to competently sign of mandatory competencies, guided by the ICAS qualification, to qualify as a CA.

These functions will be working capital, reporting, planning & analysis, fixed asset & project accounting, and technical accounting. BA(Hons) Degree is achieved at the end of Year 4 and CA Qualification is achieved at the end of Year 5.

Join BAE Systems Maritime Naval Ships team for a one-week work experience placement and earn a Silver Industrial Cadet Award. Our work experience placements will take place Monday to Thursday (8.30-15.30) for pupils aged 16 -18 at either our Scotstoun and Govan sites. Students will spend time learning about BAE System’s apprentice programmes, the business and spend time in a workshop environment creating a project that they will then be asked to do a short presentation on.

 

On this one week programme, students will develop their skills and experience through live face to face sessions and activities devised and delivered by our apprentices and engineers. From combat systems to environmental engineers, project managers and steelworkers, students will learn with experts in their fields, illustrating the impact they are making on the future of ship design and the wide range of career pathways open to students when they leave school.  

 

Students will work on an individual project and spend time with our early careers experts who will help them explore their strengths as well as school leaver opportunities. While students will have an opportunity to experience a range of BAE functions and crafts on all WEX programmes, the Scotstoun programmes will have a larger focus towards electrical, plumbing, pipe welding, sheet metal design and fabrication crafts. The Govan programme will have a larger focus towards steelwork, welding, burning and fabrication crafts.

Scope of the role

As an Apprentice Civil Design Engineer / Technician, you will be contributing to the delivery of a variety of building and public realm projects across the UK, including residential and commercial development and urban regeneration. What will I learn?

If you want to work in the Merchant Navy, you must train at college and at sea through a cadetship to get the qualifications required. SMC are a training management company on behalf of our client shipping companies, meaning you apply through us and if hired, we assist you with your workload at college, your travel and accommodation for your time working at sea, and your pay. There are five phases to a cadetship, and these involve learning at a UK college and working at sea on the vessel of the company who sponsor you.

What you will be doing

In this area would mean that you would work across a number of disciplines such as Build Line Support, Manufacturing Build Planning, Systems, Jigs and Tools, Governance, Dimensional Management, Continuous Improvement etc.  The focus is on the design, development and operation of integrated systems of production in order to obtain high quality products such as handling equipment, machine tools, robots or computers and networks. The role works between Engineering and Operations and interprets the Engineering outputs, such as drawings, tooling and documentation in order that Operations can undertake the build of the surface warships efficiently and effectively. For those people who have a passion for engineering, science and maths, then these skills would be used when working with mechanics, materials, instrumentation and measurements, pneumatics, energy conversions etc. 

To be a successful Manufacturing Engineer then having skills and a passion for problem-solving, team working, IT, being curious, being able to communicate and having attention to detail would be essential in this area and would be further developed during the scheme.
