It shows their bond not only as lovers but as best friends, who can partake in the same activities. Even if it is against societal standards.

The pear tree represents Janie's primal passion for love and intimacy as she is blossoming into a young woman. The pear tree attracts many other beings like bees. She wishes she could feel longing and desire from someone, like the pear tree has from other organisms.

The Horizon

For Janie, the Horizon represents the future and its many possibilities. It represents her dreams and what could be. What Janie wants at the end of the horizon is to be loved and have a happy exciting relationship. Tea Cake helped take her to the horizon, and fulfill her dreams of a more than ideal relationship. Even when Tea Cake died Janie still believed she had the horizon in her, and took it with her wherever she went.

Janie's Hair

Janie's hair represents how she feels, or her current situation. When she was with Joe Starks she was forced to tie her hair up. This represented how she was under a lot of control in her relationship, and lacked personal freedom. The second Joe Starks died she let her hair down, symbolizing her freedom. This is why her hair is so important to her, as it represents her.

Tea Cake

Tea Cake means everything to Janie. He is Janie's first "true" love. He was the first man to treat her how she deserved to be treated. With that, they fell deeply in love. Tea Cakes meant more to Janie than anything or anyone else in the world.
