In 1885, the King of Belgium, Leopold II, colonised the area now known as the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Colonisation is technically an inaccurate term, as the Congo was his personal property under the name of the Congo Free State. The treatment of the Congolese people was horrific; they would often have their hands chopped off for failing to meet their rubber quotas.

The health category of well-being has been severely impacted after several African countries shut down vaccination camps for diseases, such as measles, in order to stop the spread of Covid-19. Covid-19, starting in 2019, has spread to a whopping 97,000 cases in the Congo alone, resulting in 1,500 deaths.

Zaire was a French-speaking Congolese state, the third largest country in Africa, ruled by Mobutu Sese Seko. Mobutu attained his rank during a military coup in 1965 and established the Republic of Zaire. Naturally, this resulted in many deaths and the political shift was initially quite dangerous.
