Earlier in the year, Nature asked 119 scientific experts around the globe about whether they thought the coronavirus would become endemic, meaning it settles into the human population like the flu.Almost 90% of them said this was likely or very likely. Given the virus isn’t going away any time soon, Max De Courten and Rosemary Calder argue Australia’s elimination strategy is probably not viable in the long-term, and that we can’t keep locking down forever.They say as we vaccinate more and more, and transition through the phases of our four-step plan to return to pre-COVID normality, Australia’s approach should move away from anxiety-inducing daily press conferences and new case announcements.Instead, in the long-term they propose we focus on reducing fear, improving vaccination rates and investing in better treatments, as we do with other diseases we can’t eradicate or fully protect against, like the flu.They quote three Singaporean ministers, writing in The Straits Times ahead of Singapore’s gradual move towards living with COVID as a recurring disease:“The bad news is that COVID-19 may never go away. The good news is that it is possible to live normally with it in our midst.”
