The Rokeby Venus and Mary Richardson

On the 10th March in 1914 a young woman in gray was wandering in the halls of the National Gallery in London. Her name was Mary Richardson, a member of the suffragettes: Feminist that had already committed numerous acts of political propaganda (like the tragic suicide of the suffragette Emily Davinson, that throws herself under the King's horse, during a race) To avenge her Mary Richardson take a butcher knife with which ripped through the canvas of the painting of Diego Velazquez the Rokeby Venus in seven deep lacerations. She gets carried away and said: "Yes, I am a suffragette." The gesture had great resonance, while the newspapers named the author of the attack "Slasher Mary ".

“I have tried to destroy the picture of the most beautiful woman in mythological history as a protest against the Government for destroying Mrs Pankhurst, who is the most beautiful character in modern history.”

Venus is described as an innocent mutilated victim.

The act of vandalism at the National Gallery is very powerful and symbolic.
