Even though slavery ended in the North, it was still active in the South. William Lloyd Garrison was a publisher of the newspaper "The Liberator" and formed the American Anti-Slavery Society in 1833. Angelina and Sarah Grimke were daughters of southern slave owners so they saw first hand how terrible slaves were treated. They both gave lectures all over the United States about the evils of slavery. Two very well-known black abolitionists were Fredrick Douglas and Sojourner Truth. Fredrick Douglas was an escaped slave and taught against slavery and soon became a very important leader of the abolitionists movement. He also started his own antislavery newspaper called the North Star. Sojourner Truth was a previous slave and was inspired by Douglas. It began when two woman attended the World Anti-Slavery Convention named Lucretia Mott and Elizabeth Cady Stanton and were unable to speak about slavery just because they were woman. The two woman were outraged and began the women's rights movement. They decided to host a national woman's rights convention in New York. At the convention, they modeled their proposal for women's rights and the Declaration of Sentiment. The Seneca Falls convention demanded equality for woman at school, church, work, and in the voting booth.
