A healthy economy, ideally, would be one with a low wealth gap, low unemployment rate, and high overall GDP and economic growth. Parts of this have been sen throughout U.S. history, especially during times of economic health. For example, during the 1950s, Gross national product, a measure of all goods and services produced in the United States, jumped from about $200 thousand-million in 1940 to $300 thousand-million in 1950 to more than $500 thousand-million in 1960. More and more Americans now considered themselves part of the middle class.” This helped to aid one economic health, as industries were boosted and poverty decreased.

I can conclude that economic conditions in the 20th century were always back and forth. I thought of it as for every uphill there is a downhill. When the government is involved that means that the economy can be pushed up (uphill) and at the top of the hill is what one might consider a “good” economy. When the economy went downhill the government wasn’t involved because you don’t need energy to go downhill, the bottom of the hill is what one might consider a bad economy. In turn the government would have to get involved again.

I think a healthy economy looks like that of the mid to late 1990's. In this time period, economic growth increased due to less inflation. There was also less unemployment and economic stagnation. The government was also much less heavily involved. This an example of a healthy economy because the economic conditions were naturally positive, without being artificially boosted by government involvement. People were able to find success without requiring assistance. Additionally this time period supported the dot com bubble, which generated new jobs and shocked the economy into a positive growth.

At other times the govt being less involved allowed for the U.S. economy to grow and expand naturally. Depending on the conditions in the U.S. there are different amounts of govt involvment needed.

I think while it depends, and it is not beneficial for the federal government to hold too much power, a good balance of government involvement is necessary. Minimal government involvement in the 20's led to the great depression and minimal government involvement in the 90's led to recessions in the 2000's. It's also important to have government involvement during world wars to keep the economy in check with war spending and wartime rationing.

Additionally the economy must be increasing or remaining in a stable position. Preferably a healthy economy should have minimal government influence, however some unavoidable historical factors means government involvement is sometimes necessary. Additionally, decreased inflation and societal advances also help to ensure the economy is healthy.

During the 1930's significant government involvement to combat the Great Depression (policies like the New Deal), allowed the health of the economy to show significant improvements. Additionally in the 1940's, government involvement in the economy to make sure it support the war effort, allowed the U.S economy to remain healthy, and ultimately significantly improve. On the other hand in the early 1990's, when the government got involved in the economy during the Gulf War, the health of the economy decreased.
