The Colombian Exchange is a period of cultural and biological exchanges from the New and Old World. The Old world gave the New World new crops such as corn, peanuts, squash and even animal life such as turkeys, while the old world gave the new world crops such as rice, wheat and sugar and animal life such as dogs and horses and diseases such as small pox the killed most Indians living in the New world . The Old world consisted of the Eastern Hemisphere or often used to refer to Europe . The New World consisted of the Western Hemisphere

An activity i liked doing in this chapter was when we drew the Colombian exchange map, it helped when i needed to know what trades were formed.

Jamestown was the first permanent English colony in Virginia. Initially the colony was controlled by a council seven and one serving as the leader. There was many problems in the colony such as Indian attacks and most of the settlers lacked sufficient laborers skills and farming. Contaminated water and lack of food killed many settlers and man outnumbered woman for a long time. Captain John Smith became the leader in 1608 and established the ,"no work ,no food" policy . John Rolfe introduced tobacco, tobacco cultivation required many land and labor which increased the population and size of Virginia.

An activity we did on this period was examining the Salem Witch Trials in a packet , i liked this because it showed me why was there so many paranoia and it helped understand the time period overall.

Divisions over slavery in territory gained in the Mexican-American war (1846-48) were resolved in the Compromise of 1850. It gave benefits to the North and South. North got benefits such as California admitted as a free state, Slave trade prohibited in Washington D.C., and Texas loses boundary dispute with New Mexico. The South got the benefits of no slavery restrictions in Utah or New Mexico territories, Slaveholding permitted in Washington D.C., Texas gets $10 million and Fugitive Slave Law

An activity we did was drawing the states who were slave and who were free states, it helped me understand the chapter way more.

The Gilded Age was a growth of both industry and immigrants .The production of iron and steel rose dramatically and western resources like lumber, gold, and silver increased the demand for improved transportation. Railroad development enlarged as trains moved goods from the resource-rich West to the East. All of industry produced a lot of money for people like John D. Rockefeller and Andrew Carnegie also known as robber barons , robber barons are people who got rich through business deals. The Gilded Age gets its name from the many great fortunes created during this period and the way of life this wealth supported.

An activity we did on this period is when some people were factory owners and other people were workers , i liked this because it helped understand how bad was the gilded age back then.

The Spanish-American War was a war between the United States and Spain that ended Spanish colonial rule in the Americas and also gave the U.S. land in the western Pacific and Latin America. The war started when Cuba was fighting for its independence from Spain, which began in February 1895.Spain declared war on the United States on April 24 . The war was one-sided, since Spain had readied neither its army or its navy for a distant war with the power of the United States. The Treaty of Paris wich was signed in Dec. 10, 1898. Spain renounced all claim to Cuba, ceded Guam and Puerto Rico to the United States, and transferred sovereignty over the Philippines to the United States for $20,000,000.

We read part of the "jungle" it did not like it because it was simply boring and did not help me understand the period better.

Brown v. Board of Education now known as one of the greatest Supreme Court decisions of the 20th century, unanimously held that the racial segregation of children in public schools that violated the Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment. Although the decision did not succeed in fully desegregating public education in the United States, it did put the Constitution on the side of racial equality. This Supreme court case overturned the decision in Plessy vs Ferguson which stated equal but separate.

An activity would be the time capsule, i didnt like it because it was just making a box and really didnt learn anything from it

The two people running for president were Ronald W. Reagan for the republican and Jimmy Carter for democratic. Reagan stressed the communist threat abroad and the dire effects that "big government" was having on the country’s economy, but he never clearly spelled out his remedies beyond calling for a massive cut in income taxes. Meanwhile, Carter spent most of the campaign attempting to paint his opponent as an extremist who would divide the nation and tend to shoot from the hip in international relations. The winner was Ronald W. Reagan with 489 electoral votes and 43,642,639 popular votes.

We read a speech about the Berlin wall, it helped me understand the problem and what the president wanted to do.

The English and the French fought in North America, the Caribbean, and in India. The war provided Great Britain territory in North America, but disputes over subsequent frontier policy and paying the war’s expenses led to colonial discontent, and ultimately to the American Revolution. The French and Indian War was a result from ongoing frontier tensions in North America as both French and British were both trying to extend each others country’s sphere of influence in frontier region

An activity that i remember from this period is watching a movie, i liked it because it gave me a more clear view of the time period

In the War of 1812, the United States took on Great Britain, in a fight that would have an immense effect on the young country’s future. Causes of the war included British attempts to restrict U.S. trade, the Royal Navy’s impressment of American seamen and America’s wanting to expand its territory. American troops were able to repulse British invasions in New York, Baltimore and New Orleans, which resulted in a boost in national confidence and fostering a new spirit of patriotism. The ratification of the Treaty of Ghent on February 17, 1815 ended the war but there were still many problems not solved.

One of the projects that we did in this chapter were the ones we did an essay an glued it on a contraption and is on the roof , i did not like it because most of the projects were too big to be put on the roof and most just broked down.
