Final Question

In The Outsiders by S.E Hinton, the author develops the theme of loss of innocence throughout the story with characters, events, and plot. An example of her doing this is the act of Johnny killing Bob. Johnny was once pure and innocent, still "gold." he had never participated in the horrible acts that his gangmates did, although it was hard sometimes. But Johnny had no choice but to kill Bob and lose the innocence he so deeply valued to save Ponyboy. As the story progresses, Hinton puts more emphasis on innocence, especially when Johnny dies and the full weight of his words is put onto Ponyboy. Ponyboy realizes that the words "stay gold" mean that he should stay pure. Johnny does not want his loss of innocence to be in vain when he says this. But, Ponyboy eventually does lose his innocence when he threatens the Socs. At that point, he was so tired of losing everyone that he didn't want to be innocent in a world of corruption, it was too hard. So when he had the bottle that time, he was going to use it for good, and keep on doing bad things. In the novel, the author uses characters, events, and the plot to create the theme of losing innocence.

This image represents Pony's innocence as a flower, surrounded by death and things that want to hurt him, like Cacti. It's hard for Ponyboy to keep his innocence when he's in an environment like that, but somehow he manages to.
