Students were sorted into their houses according to the traits reflected by each house that they possessed in themselves. And this sorting process was carried out by a magical hat called (surprise, surprise) The Sorting Hat. Once placed upon a student’s head, the Hat can peer into the wearer’s mind to discern their inner strengths, weaknesses, and remarkable qualities. Then, in a commanding tone, the Hat will proclaim the appropriate house for the judged.
