How I think religion led to the diversification of the Caribbean
As the Europeans invaded the home of the "New world" natives, they not only brought with them the mission to make profit, they also had the intention of conquering the land; making the natives subjects. The Spanish for example wanted to 'civilize' the people, and so , forced their religion on to the neo indians. Many factors such as this act of forcing religion led to caribbean diversity. Religions vary due to factors such as:
-Cultural retention (Hinduism)
-Protestantism/Rejecting the ideologies of the forced christian religion (Anglican etc.)
-Missionaries (Presbyterian)
-Cultural retention with strong 'forced religion'/Catholic influence (African-syncretic religions)

Image: clipartkid.com

Colonization made the purpose of the islands to be for the provision of the mother countries. Agriculture was the main source of income from the colonies that required manual labour. Because of this labour was imported either by slavery , indentureship or otherwise. Coming from all different countries , races, religions, practises, food and cultures unavoidably mixed. For many the colonization process was a brutal and unfortunate one. As it ended , we now see the end result in 'mixed' families.

In my family, my mother is considered 'douglar' as it's called in Trinidad being mixed with African and Indian. My Great grand mother (Mother's grandmom on her father's side) came to Trinidad because of Indian indentureship. My father's mother was portuguese. As a result my siblings and I all look different (although one or two of us have a bit of a resemblance)

After going on this journey I learned a lot, not just the course material. the most valuable lessons for me would be this, that time changes nothing and everything . What am I saying ? (Dr.C) I am Saying that yes, living at this time in history I can see what has changed and what remains the same . I can see that although a huge event in history is'long gone' and we have become independent that we in the Caribbean can still feel strongly about what has happened. It is not that we who feel strongly are 'holding a grudge' or hate for anyone but what it is is that we are able still to remember, to know, and to be able to mourn and really in that way, connect to tthe emotions that make us human . That we could become impassioned in an online group chat about what some would deem unnecessary to 'argue' over about the past and how it affects us now shows me that we are all still very human and are connected one way or another. The enslaved were africans but it didnt mean that my friends of indian descent didnt cry over the Amistad movie clip. We are not originally monsters.

This course led me to tears, laughter, thought , anger and dancing. A series of emotions and experiences that every Caribbean person should have. I am totally for revisionism. The revisionist perspective given for this course truly helped in moving away from all the biases and getting closer to what really happened in our home-The Caribbean
