They wanted to create a Utopian government ruled by God, also known as the City Upon a Hill. In Salem, MA witchcraft was very common and often all around the city. To stop the mass spread of witchcraft, they held trials of people who were accused of witchcraft. Many people were accused, which lead to them being severely tortured or even thrown in jail. Arthur Miller, a famous screenwriter in the 50s wrote his phenomenal play,  "The Crucible," which got inspiration from and talked about The Salem Witch Trials and compared that experiences to was happening in the 50s at the time, also known as The Cold War.
