If the female cat is ready to mate, she will want get to know the male cat. The two cats will explore each others bodies, they might rub heads, lick each other, and also look at each other's genitalia. This is when the female starts to prepare further for mating, she becomes aroused, and then assumes the mating stance, hind in air and tail to side. The mating process can get aggressive between the queen and tom if the queen is not ready to be mounted. This can happen when the female is in the beginning stage of the "heat" cycle and is not willing to receive the male. She may try and bite the tom to keep him away.

Queens may be selective when it comes to who she would like to mate with.

The estrus stage is called "heat". The signs of heat are similar to the poestrus stage, but intensified. The female will meow frequently and loudly attempting to attract a male. She will then be in a crouching position with the front legs pressed to the ground as well as hyper extending the back, which exposes the genitalia, to display that she is ready for mating.

Male cats are called toms, and female cats are sometimes referred to as queens. The females will attract the males by vocalizing and "flirting" with her body language. When she is ready, she takes on the position to get ready to be mounted. When it comes to when/who they want to mate with, the females choose. Like dogs when they "become overly aggressive and exhibit atypical social behaviors," (Price 160), cats can be aggressive with each other and humans during this process. Various animals can show aggression during mating as well though.

In order for mating to happen between toms and queens, female cats go through four hormonal cycles: proestrus, estrus, interestrus, and anestrus.
