The Italian peninsula was divided into independent states and there were no calls for unification until Napoleon came around. When he invaded Italy he created the kingdom of italy in the north, When he was defeated Italy went back to independent states. That's how it was until the revolutions in 1848 swept across Europe. Rome declared a republic that was led by Giuseppe Mazzini, but the first Italian war for independence failed. The kingdom of Italy was proclaimed in 1861 after many other European countries started gaining their independence.

Colombia gained it's independence from Spain through many series of movements starting in 1810. The area that is Colombia today came together to form a nation after gaining its independence. The region was known as Gran Colombia but that fell apart in 1831. The decisive battle was in 1819, key leaders like Simon Bolivar played important roles in gaining independence. The unification involved combining many regions after gaining independence from Spain.

Gran Colombia included modern-day Colombia, Panama, Venezuela, and Ecuador, but it did not last long and it was established during the Latin American wars of independence from Spain. Simon Bolivar played a big role as president of Gran Colombia. He led military campaigns that liberated these territories from Spanish rule, and the republic was formally organized in 1821. Gran Colombia was a success at first but it faced internal conflicts and in 1826 a rebellion in Venezuela led by José Antonio Paez. Bolivar tried to keep unity but he was unsuccessful and by 1830 multiple countries withdrew from unification leading to the end of Gran Colombia.

Germany was divided into many independent states, but they were somewhat united in the Holy Roman Empire. Austria was the most powerful state in the empire, but during the reformation their control over the German states began to die down. Napoleon created the confederation of the Rhine out of his conquests in Germany. When Napoleon was in retreat, young Germans from all states began to volunteer to fight against France. It was ineffective at stopping the fights between Prussia and Austria. Unification calls kept growing and eventually caused the revolutions of 1848 which spread across Germany. These revolutions prompted liberals to meet and push for a united German constitution.

The unification of Germany was primarily driven by Otto Von Bismarck's strategy and military actions. The unification started after they defeated Austria in 1866, called the seven weeks war. This led to the North German Confederation, later Otto Von Bismarck used southern German states against France in the Franco-Prussian War. They ended up winning the war and captured Napoleon at the battle of Sedan. This led to in 1871, the proclamation of the German empire and this marked the peak of the German unification.
