There is not much other than the detail in the waves, and the soft sky in the background.
Jenna-
Jake-
Eric- Blue and white waves

Analyze:
Annabelle- The piece in itself is harsh and almost looks stormy, but the soft sky in the back is almost contradicting that theory.
Jenna-
Jake-
Eric- it looks really windy like a storm is about to happen

Interpret:
Annabelle- It seems that the piece may represent harsh scenarios with a softer and nicer meaning behind them.

Artist: Vincent van Gogh

Date: June 1889

Materials: Oil paint on canvas

Size: 2’5” x 3’0”

Description:

Alyssa: The first thing that I noticed was the hard black outline of a twisting tree in the foreground against the night sky in the background. The sky is swirling with endless shades of yellow and blue, with a very yellow crescent moon perched in the sky. In front of the oiled swirling sky, there are rolling hills that are made up of dark blues and blacks. A village is seen at the base of the hills, and the most noticeable building is the white steeple of a church tower. The brushstrokes are thick and distinguished, making the different colors seem to shine out at the viewer.

Marc:

Maddie:

Analysis:

Alyssa: Van Gogh shows the main center of interest by using bright colors and very distinguished and sharp designs in the sky. While all the other colors in the painting are dark, the sky is made of many whites and bright yellows to attract the eyes. The tree in the foreground is also a center of interest, since it is so dark compared to everything else, and overlaps the bright sky.

Marc:

Maddie:

Interpretation:

Alyssa: Since I know about the artist himself, I believe this painting was the release of emotion, and an attempt to put on canvas the way he saw the world. He had many mental problems and it weighed hard on him; he painted this after admitting himself into an asylum. The strangeness of the painting and the movement of the sky makes me believe he may have been pouring his sorrow and confusion into this piece, or perhaps trying to make sense of his hometown in his own way.

Marc:

Maddie:

Judgement:

Alyssa: I love this painting very much, and I know for a fact that it was a great success. It is one of many pieces of the story that Van Gogh left behind, and it lives on to this day. I sometimes wonder what he would think if he could see the way people now love the art that others used to make fun of him for.

Marc:

Maddie:
