Procedural reasoning - NAINGUE

I chose procedural reasoning because it helps identify problems, set goals, and select interventions that directly target his sensory and behavioral challenges, helping him function better at home and school. For the procedural reasoning, I would focus on Ethan’s sensory processing, particularly his visual processing and self-regulation, since he struggles with eye contact, maintaining attention, and frequent meltdowns during mealtime and dressing. I’d use sensory integration activities like swinging to help him stay calm and focused, making it fun without overwhelming him with all the activities. Additionally, playing games that require visual focus, such as matching or sorting color and shape cards, can improve his visual attention and engagement. I chose procedural reasoning because it helps identify problems, set goals, and select interventions that directly target his sensory and behavioral challenges, helping him function better at home and school.

As an OT, I would create a calm, welcoming space where Ethan feels safe and understood. Since he struggles with eye contact and routines, I’d approach him gently, using play-based activities and towards his interests to build trust. I’d observe his sensory cues and adjust activities to support his comfort and self-regulation, while validating his feelings and using empathy or some jokes to keep him engaged. I’d also communicate openly with his parents to understand his routines better and make sure that therapy feels consistent and meaningful for him.

Pragmatic Reasoning - BURDADOR

Using the Pragmatic Reasoning, I will focus on family-centered, coaching-oriented therapeutic relationship to ensure that the strategies are simple, can be repeated, effective and sustainable in the natural context. The intervention plan should align with the child’s daily routine and as his primary occupation is a student, it is best to collaborate with his parents, teacher, speech therapist etc. to ensure consistency in his routine in both at home and in school. The OT can assist the parents of the child through sensory modulation, visual support and regulation strategies that can be used at home and in school. Educating and coaching the parents would increase feasibility and reduce the burden of child care.

Conditional Reasoning - CINCO

I chose conditional reasoning because it helps me see Ethan not just as a child with ASD but as a whole person with his own world, emotions, and routines. Reading his case made me realize that every small detail like his environment, how people talk to him, and his daily habits affects how he participates and grows.

As a student OT, I’ve learned that it’s not enough to focus only on what a client can or can’t do. Conditional reasoning reminds me to look deeper, to understand why certain things happen and how I can help in a way that truly fits their life. With Ethan, I imagine creating activities that not only meet his needs today but also support who he’s becoming. For me, conditional reasoning is about empathy, growth, and seeing potential in every child’s story.

Narrative reasoning - Encio

As an OT student, I chose narrative reasoning to frame my approach, which is essential for establishing a truly client- and family-centered plan for Ethan. This reasoning allows me to understand not just Ethan's functional limitations, but the meaning of his experiences—such as frequent meltdowns during ADLs (mealtime and dressing) and challenges with social participation—from the perspective of his and his parents' current life story. By utilizing narrative reasoning, I will co-create a new, desired future by engaging the family in meaningful occupations and helping them reframe their experience from "overwhelmed" to "competent," ultimately promoting Ethan's self-regulation and overall well-being. The long-term goal is to help them live a new story where successful engagement in routines and social play is the norm, not the exception.
