For African Americans this was a positive step forward. In this specific photo, people apart of the Committee on Racial Equality (CORE) are protesting for equal opportunities in renting apartments for African Americans. Acts of defiance such as this one led to the Fair Housing Act, which prevents discrimination when selling housing. This was initially a big problem being that African Americans and immigrants lowered housing values once they lived somewhere. This led to people discriminating against non-whites to protect the value of their land and properties for things such as education.

The ghettos of cities housed minorities in an often dangerous and poorly kept environment. As whites started living in suburbs, Africans Americans were stuck in ghetto areas, unable to live desired suburban lives. When they lived in an area it, supposedly, lowered housing value. This ties into public school education given it is based on the values of housing in its area. This encouraged more people to not want African Americans and immigrants living in their public school zones, being it lowered their children's level of education.

In the summer of 1967 in African American neighborhoods, race riots (picture above shows the result) broke out after a continuous build up of tension. People were both injured and killed over problems associated with unemployment (even though several new jobs were created due to a consumer economy), poor housing situations, and other ways African Americans were discriminated against. The riots were a scream for their deserved rights and equality in all aspects of their life. America progressed as a consumer economy, which initially created more negatives than positives for African Americans such as these riots, until later dealt with.

Jennings, a 36-year-old black man, native Detroiter and father of 14, had recently lost his job as a wrecker at a local salvage yard. On Sunday, he decided to go for a walk.

From this incident, it can be implied that Daniel Jennings broke into the building because he felt this was the only way to provide for his very large family after losing his already low income job. African Americans were more often than not poorly educated due to their mediocre public school systems in ghetto and impoverished areas, leading them to low income, unpromising jobs. Daniel was shot while attempting to steal from a store, whether his intentions were good or not due to his lack of options to support his family.

In the 20th century, buying and selling houses was a big change that came from the consumer economy, except that African Americans were excluded and discriminated against during the process being they brought property values down, angering racist whites. Housing conditions and restrictions on African Americans were unjust and unethical, leading to endless riots and protests demanding for equality. The consumer economy in housing only positively impacted African Americans once the Fair Housing Act was created.
