Ancient Greece was a civilisation that existed after the Greek Dark Ages, BC 800, to AD 400-600. It had great influences, especially Ancient Rome as they took Greek culture and introduced it to the 'Mediterranean Basin' and other parts of Europe. The two most significant periods were the Archaic and Classical Period, between BC 800-400, as populations grew by over ten times. Some of the major contributions of this civilisation include: modern Western Philosophy, mathematics (geometry and development of Calculus) and the introduction of a democratic society. Rome took the idea of a democracy and developed it even further to something similar to what we have today.
In this virtual museum you will find real artefacts and sources that exist to this day and be amazed by how sophisticated and impressive Ancient Greece was.

Art was a major part of Ancient Greece, with pottery, architecture and sculpting being very successful. Pottery was commonly painted and then deposited in tombs to wish good luck in the afterlife. The most famous type of Greek pottery reached its peak in 600-350 BC. Sculptures were based off Egyptian works, but evolved to a form of unique Greek art. Sculptures could be made of limestone and rock, as well as marble for more grand pieces of work. Ancient Greek architecture was also very impressive. The Ancient Greeks built many temples, treasury and public buildings made of mud-rock and stones, with some that are still standing to this day. All though many have eroded, like the Parthenon, it has been standing for millenniums.

Ancient Greece used to be run by Aristocracy and Tyranny. People were not satisfied with this, so around 500 BC, The empire of Athens in Greece developed democracy. It was direct democracy, so certain citizens voted on laws and there was no inequality in power between citizens. Only males over the age of 18 could vote and only a minority of people were chosen. However, after many democratic leaders, changed were implemented to help create more equality, regardless of social status.
One of the longest and most successful leaders was a politician named Pericles. He changed the society and turned it into an empire with the construction of Parthenon, a large temple. He ruled very wisely from 449-431 BC, and the period under his rule was known as the "Golden Age".
After Pericles died, democracy in Greece was replaced by oligarchy after it was defeated by Sicily at war, 409 BC.

Ancient Greece is located near the Mediterranean Sea, and therefore its climate is very hot and dry in the summer and still comfortable in the winter. Greece is known for having high mountains inland but it also has a coast and lowlands. The ground was very uneven, which made the areas with very fertile soil scattered around. The rainfall was not consistent, so wheat plants were commonly found to die or grow very poorly.
A large amount of Greek's economy was spent on imported goods. A lot of trade occurred with other societies, especially with food. Retail merchants, men and women would sell all types of goods, ranging from fish to vegetables to perfume. Merchants would be charged a fee to use the marketplace.

There were over 10 Greek gods that Ancient Greeks would worship. The most well-known are Zeus, the king of all gods and Poseidon, the god of the seas. Although the myths suggest all gods were immortal, not all of them were good. In many stories these gods would interact with humans and mislead them with their charm and power. Ancient Greeks would pray to these gods when distressed, e.g. they would pray to Poseidon when there was no rain.
Another common belief these people had was of the afterlife. The afterlife was an 'underworld' where dead people would go to and it was ruled by the god Hades. People believed that the afterlife was either a journey or the opening to a new world. Those who entered the Underworld would be tested to see if they were evil or good, and ones who failed would be locked up in the dungeons for eternity. This influenced the way Ancient Greeks would act significantly

Ancient Greece had 4 social statuses: The upper class, middle class, lower class and slaves. The upper-class must have been born in Athens to receive this power and position. The upper class were generally good and socialised with others. Following that was the middle-class, who were not natives of Athens, but settled down to earn a living. They didn't get as many rights or power as the upper-class, but they were free men and women. The lower-class/ freed men were people who were freed by their owners. They had few rights but were very limited and weren't even given citizenship. The slaves were at the very bottom, and these people had absolutely no privileges or rights. The only way they could have become free was to pay a large ransom to their owner.

Ancient Greece was the first European civilisation to use an alphabet for their language, which led to many other civilisations following their footsteps. One of the major parts of Ancient Greek life was the theatre as many festivals and music performances were held there. Ancient Greeks would hold comedy and acting plays and orchestras at this theatre.
