I believe that Holden suffers from depression. Multiple times throughout the book Holden talks having trouble concentrating on school and that's why he is always being kicked out of schools. And Holden also have feelings of being hopeless/worthless in the book. As well as a loss of pleasure. These are all symptoms of depression. I feel that the author highlights this by using a depressing tone to write the book.

Holden suffers from depression in the novel called The Catcher in the Rye. Holden shows many symptoms throughout the book, through words and actions. The author, J.D. Salinger wrote the book from Holden's perspective, so the reader can understand what he's thinking or feeling. The author also repeats phrases a lot to make a point. For example, Holden says he's feeling depressed multiple times.
-Senae Moore
