Mary grew up in a small town tucked away in the mountains of West Virginia. She attended a local elementary school with an enrollment of only 120 student in grades 1-8. Her school had only 9 classes and 9 teachers. Mary knew virtually all of the families in town, because of her involvement in the town's co-op and church on Sundays. Her family talked about her brother doing well in high school and then opening a business. For Mary, the conversation revolved around potential suitors and someday converting her parents to grandparents.
When Mary moved to your much larger community, she was overwhelmed. She says that she was never with so many students in one school, or in one class, in her life. You suspect this may be why she is so overwhelmed. You also think she may be reacting to the fact that the children in this town are all so different from those in her old town. Mary is now quite introverted and rarely speaks, in part because some students make fun of her accent. She is self-conscious about her background and all the things she does not seem to know that everyone else does.
When you finally meet her parents, they are very quiet and also a bit overwhelmed. They were extremely hesitant to come to the school. Although Mary takes her schoolwork and is doing fine right now, you are concerned that she may get lost in this new crowd, perhaps turn off from school, or worse yet, drop out.

Mary comes from a small town and is use to knowing people in her community. To help her feel comfortable in a bigger setting, the teacher should make an effort to create a better community within the classroom, and try to do more small group work so that Mary will feel more comfortable working with her peers.

A strong relationship with Mary may also help her see a future for herself beyond being a wife and mother. If she develops a close relationship with a teacher who is willing and interested in discussing her goals and wishes, She may develop a role model and find a passion of her own, motivating her to stay in school to pursue said passion.
