Fado is a musical style that dates back to the 1820s in Lisbon. Although the origins are difficult to trace, today fado is commonly considered a form of music that must follow a certain traditional structure. In popular belief, fado is a form of music characterized by sad melodies and lyrics, often about the sea or poverty, and imbued with a feeling of resignation, fate and melancholy. The Portuguese word saudade translates the relationship of the Portuguese people with this style of music, symbolizing a feeling of loss (a permanent and irreparable loss and its consequent damage throughout life).
