I am thinking about the importance of belonging to something, how difficult and chaotic life is for ”the outsiders”. When you belong and feel accepted you feel confident. It doesn’t have to be about nationality, it can mean that you are active in sports, or even that you belong to a criminal gang…. Everyone needs to be seen and appreciated for who they are.
The photo I have chosen is from this summer when I was out wandering on Northern Ireland with one of my sons, Sven. Sven is a very quiet and shy young man. He has no friends. Of course he belongs to us, but he will also need attention from people of his own age. This worries me as his mother…

The topic of identity is sometimes neglected when globalization and internationalization are emphasized. Students are encouraged to adapt to different cultures, environments, however, it is crucial to define one's identity and the group they belong to be it nationally, socially or any other way. Thus, the major point of yhis lesson was to remind students that the sense of belonging empowers them and to use the tools learnt in helping to find their identity.

I have learned that identity begins with self-knowledge. Who am I? When we learn more about other cultures, we are able to create our national identity, listening to what kind of society we belong to. The world is changing from itself, from self-knowledge, from self-transformation.

In the classroom, I'm not just the one teaching the subject and imparting knowledge. You are so much more. You bring your whole personality with you. Who you are, your experiences, your enthusiasm and your own past. For lessons to be successful, you shouldn't deny yourself and want to be someone you are not. It is important to be authentic. In addition to the experiences of the last few years, in which I have only taught older students, I now have to go a new way again because I am now teaching younger children. That's why I can't expect too much, but have to be patient if they can't and even don't want to do everything right away. They have to grow first and I have to grow with them. In order for learning to succeed, I have to try to motivate them differently and to positively reinforce learning.
