History of the Duchess of Galliera di Voltri

The Duchess of Galliera, Maria Brignole Sale De Ferrari, was born in Genoa in 1811 and was an important philanthropist and benefactor: it is due to her the birth of the first Genoese museums, Palazzo Rosso and Palazzo Bianco, and the foundation of Galliera hospitals and St. Philip.

At 17, Maria married the Marquis Raffaele De Ferrari, but their life was marked by a serious accident: her husband, intent on cleaning a gun, accidentally killed a servant. The fact troubled so much the man who decided to immerse himself in work in Paris. There, the couple bought many possessions of the French royal family who were trying to avoid bankruptcy.

Unfortunately, almost all the sons of Maria and Raffaele died prematurely: the first, Livia, after just a few months. The second son Andrea died in Paris at the age of 16, while the third, Philip, rebel and indomitable philatelist, perpetually at odds with his family, broke off relations (also because the mother was in perpetual mourning for the previous son and in this Filippo did not grow well) and he was adopted by an officer of the Austro-Hungarian empire, renouncing his parents' noble titles and dying without descent.

in 1876, Maria continued her philanthropic activity by founding the Galliera, Sant'Andrea, San Filippo and San Raffaele hospitals. He donated to the Comune Palazzo Rosso and Palazzo Bianco, and took away from his possessions in Paris a considerable quantity of works of art to be assigned to Palazzo Rosso. At his death, with no more heirs, Maria left the Villa Brignole Sale Duchess of Galliera di Voltri to the Opera Pia, which since 1931 has been in use and in part owned by the Municipality.
