I know it's a stretch but maybe the Islanders who are disappearing are being forced into joining the memory police and almost enforcing the values the memory police have; therefore if the people disagree with joining then they must have killed or keep those who disagree in solitary confinement in order to keep the people who are against the memory police out of their way during the "process" as described later on page 106. I think this because in paragraph two the protagonist says "the guards continued to ignore me, as though they were under orders not to speak."  She then describes one of the guards as "pale, much younger, just a boy." Looking back on it, this novel was not like other, similar novels I have read. In most books, I feel like I am connected to the protagonist, but in this book I was almost indifferent to her disappearance. As I continued on to the middle it got so intense and had lots of action, however towards the end of the book it kept dragging on with excessive dialogue that was really not needed to help the reader make more connections or inferences to keep the reader hooked .There is LOTS of repetition, and I honestly feel like this book didn't really have a defined plot.
