Bruce is a 6-year old student with ASD. He needs assistance with calming down when he is upset. Discussion between counselor, parents, and teacher determined what coping skills would be best for Bruce. Ultimately, it was decided that having a visual countdown with breathing in and out slowly would work best. During a session with Bruce, the counselor worked on identifying emotions and created a visual countdown for his coping toolbox. Bruce's teacher points to the visual countdown and he immediately begins to slowly breath while counting backwards from 5. Bruce's family reinforces this visual countdown and breathing strategy at home.
