I like this quote because it shows how much Jonas cares about doing whats right. Jonas is faced with a lot of challenges and keeps doing everything he can to get through these challenges. His biggest challenge comes when he has to confront Mr. Hartwell (his basketball coach) about all the things that Mr. Hartwell has done. Mr. Hartwell did many bad things that effected Jonas, such as doing sexually bad things to Levi that ultimately drove Levi to kill himself, serve beers to players at his apartment, and he was involved in an accident with Jonas's favorite coach, coach Knecht. He owes to Levi justice for what Mr. Hartwell had done to him and to everyone else who was involved in the bad things he did. Jonas was able to send Mr. Hartwell to jail for a year and make sure he would never coach or teach again by telling Mr.Diaz the principal. Even though Mr. Hartwell didn't go to prison, Jonas was still happy that he was able to make a difference and make sure Mr. Hartwell would never do anything like that to anyone else.

This image represents the hard decisions that Jonas has to make throughout the story. The start of the book starts with Jonas having to make the decision on whether or no he wants to get his grades up so he can play college basketball or to work at the gravel company down at Redwood city harbor with his dad. In the middle of the book were Jonas had to decide if he wanted to move to Seattle for his dad's new job or stay in Redwood California were he was used to everything. At the end of the book Jonas has to decide whether or not he wants to tell the principal the truth about Mr. Hartwell and keep his scholarship to Monitor college or to not say anything and keep his scholarship. The ball being stuck on the rim shows how Jonas is constantly having to make huge decisions. At the end of the day Jonas ends up making all the right decisions which were costly, but needed to be done. Sometimes all you need is a lucky bounce or for things to go your way.

Book Review from Publishers Weekly

When 17-year-old basketball player Jonas Dolan moves to Seattle, he not only has to earn a spot on a new team, he also needs to spend enough time on the court to impress a college coach interested in giving him a scholarship. When the team’s coach is injured, and young Coach Hartwell takes over with a fast-break style that’s in line with Jonas’s own, the team starts winning—and Jonas finally has a starring role as point guard. But Deuker (Payback Time) provides enough foreshadowing for readers to understand that something is wrong with the new coach, who served beer to players at a party at his apartment and was involved in the accident that landed Coach Knecht in the hospital. The novel includes descriptions of many basketball plays and strategies, which should make this book particularly appealing to fans of the game. The plotting is otherwise somewhat slow—despite short, rapid-fire chapters—but once Jonas (and readers) figure out what’s going on with Coach Hartwell, the pace quickens, and Jonas’s struggle to do the right thing intensifies. Ages 12–up. (Nov.) --Staff (Reviewed October 14, 2013) (Publishers Weekly, vol 260, issue 41, p)

I agree with the book review, Jonas has a hard time doing the right thing. Jonas wants to do the right thing because of all that Mr. Hartwell has done, but soon realizes how hard doing the right thing really is. Jonas had to make a decision between doing the right thing or getting a scholarship to play basketball for Monitor colleg in New Hampshire. Eventually Jonas chooses to do the right thing and tell the principal everything. Mr. Hartwell ends up going to jail for a year and can never coach or teach again and even though he looses the scholarship he ends up playing for a community college anyways.

Throughout the course of the novel novel the author makes Mr. Hartwell seem different from all of the other characters. Mr. Hartwell may seem like the perfect man at the beginning of the book, but he seems to perfect. Jonas loved Mr. Hartwell throughout the three quarters of the book, until he found out all of the bad things that Mr. Hartwell had done. Jonas started to figure out that there was something that isn't right about him. Jonas quickly realizes he was right after he asks Levi what was wrong with him and he said that Mr. Hartwell had been doing inappropriate things to him. After this point of time Jonas tries to figure out what other bad things that Mr. Hartwell is doing and finds even more than he expects. I started to realize something was wrong as soon as Levi was acting weird because of the author putting in little things about him throughout the story. Jonas ends up finding out Mr. Hartwell was behind all of the bad things that was happening to their team.

"I'm going to work both on the basketball court and in the classroom" (Deuker 296). These words really stood out to me because they are words to live by. Being a student athlete myself I know how hard it can be to do well both academically and at the sport that I am playing. Jonas throughout the novel shows how hard it can be to do well at both. Jonas also shows how with a little bit of extra effort you can accomplish more than you think that you can. At the beginning of the book Jonas is a bad student, but a good basketball player, but by the end of the book he's a really good basketball player and an above average student. Being a student athlete can be really difficult, but as long as your focus is on the right things it becomes easier. To accomplish anything in life all you need is a little bit of extra effort.
