In Life of Pi, one of the most important choices he has to make almost periodically throughout the novel, is whether or not he should be trying to maintain Richard Parker, the tiger, or not. In the most recent section there is a line that says "[...] my behaviour was not an act of insanity or a covert 🤬 attempt, but a simple necessity. Either I tamed him, made him see who was number one and who was number two--or I die [...]" (72). I agree with this choice 100% because he is forced to survive with this animal for however long, and if he was going to make it, he needed to lessen the amount of threats. Putting this animal on a leveled playing field with him, while also trying to express that he is in charge and has more dominance, was the best choice to make. Ocean life will come and go, but Richard Parker will always remain on the lifeboat and so I agree with his choice to try and tame the tiger. Especially, because he does have lots of experience with animals from working in a zoo and so he knows what kind of tactics to make, and can identify the tiger's reactions and feelings.

One of the most prevalent conflicts in “ Life of Pi” is Character vs. Nature. The main character Pi, is stuck on a lifeboat for the duration of the novel with Richard Parker, a huge tiger that could easily take his life. There are numerous occasions where Pi is faced with the decision of getting rid of Richard Parker. In the beginning he could have left him behind, throughout the novel he could have simply starved him and waited for him to die. Time and time again, Pi decides to take care of Richard Parker and learns to share the lifeboat with this magnificent beast.

In the third section of the novel, and right before the odd couples boat comes ashore, Pi slips into what I believe is a delirious state. Pi dreams he has come upon an island which appears to be his salvation, but turns out to be a carnivorous island that will kill him in the night. While leaving the island Pi says “ I could not abandon Richard Parker. To leave him would mean to kill him. He would not survive the first night”(p314). Showing that even in a lucid state, Pi is thinking about Richard Parker's well being.

Every time Pi makes the decision to keep Richard Parker alive in this novel, I asked myself if I would have the courage to do the same. The honest answer is no, when you read about Pi calling the tiger over to the lifeboat, you would have read about me, watching the Tiger drown. I do not agree with this decision because I know my survival instincts would kick in and snuggling with a tiger doesn’t seem like the best way to prolong my life. If I grew up in a zoo and had knowledge of how to train a tiger, maybe my decision would be different.

"I had to tame him. It was at that moment I realized this necessity"
Pi at this moment realizes that in order to survive he must tame Richard Parker. Pi also believes that taming Richard Parker is also benificial for his survival as well.
Pi then uses his whistle to show the animal dominence in an almost circus type way. He also starts feeding Richard Parker fish regularly so the tiger depends on him. I agree with Pi's decision to try and tame Richard Parker. I believe it was indeed "a necessity" to do so because I don't believe Pi nor Richard Parker would've survived the ordeal if it hadn't been for this decision. Pi would've likely been attacked by the unpredictable Richard Parker eventually. Also, If Pi, being Richard Parker's caregiver had died the tiger would've eventually starved to death from lack of a food source. On two seperate occasions Pi would've also died if it hadn't been for Richard Parker. The Hyena would've eventually attacked and killed Pi if it hadn't been for Richard Parker killing it first. The Frenchman would've also likely killed and eaten Pi if it hadn't been for Richard Parker as well.

Pi Patel was faced with many conflicts in this novel. Not only was he forced to survive on a lifeboat with a tiger and many other dangers, but he also had to deal with self conflict. Pi has to overcome the fact the he would have to eat meat in order to survive. He would have to overcome his feelings for living creatures. Pi was a vegetarian and if he was to survive, he was going to have to adjust. I can agree with Pi’s decisions when it came to food. Anything becomes fair game when your desperately holding on to what’s left of yourself. When you are are starving to death, anything could become easier to eat over time. It almost becomes normal. At one point in the novel, Pi admits to eating some flesh from the Frenchman’s arm he was using for bait. He was starving and felt he had no other choice.

When the French drifter was killed by Richard Parker, Pi admits that he used a part of his arm to bait fish and even ate some. “I will confess that I caught one of his arms with the gaff and used his flesh as bait. I will further confess that, driven by the extremity of my need and the madness to which it pushed me, I ate some of his flesh.” (Chapter 91, page 284.)

Life of Pi
In this novel Life of Pi, the main conflict is related to Pi's struggle and fight for survival to overcome some of the obstacles in his survival. After the ship sunk and the loss of his family, he realizes that he has to continue living with his terrible loss. He had to face himself “Something in me did not want to give up on life, was unwilling to let go, wanted to fight to the very end. Where that part of me got the heart, I don’t know.” (Martel, 57). I agree that he has to survive and don’t give up, also he has to face his fear, he's grieving, he has no choice just to fight for his life. I know that Pi also had to face the natural environment to survive. It is essential to find drinkable water, and provide food for himself and the tiger Richard Parker. Luckily the rain covers the need for freshwater , he found a way to capture rain water but the food was a big obstacle for him, he had to learn how to fish, and that is against his beliefs as Hindu and being vegetarian,” Lord, to think that I'm a strict vegetarian. To think that when I was a child I always shuddered when I snapped open a banana because it sounded to me like the breaking of an animal's neck. I descended to a level of savagery I never imagined possible. (Martel, 105) , I think he had no choice, he had to fish to provide for himself and Richard Parker or he would die.

After Muchoki’s mother passes away in the refugee camp, he learns that he and his sister, Jata, will be sent to two different orphanages. He makes the decision to take his seven-year-old sister and run away from the camp. ”In the morning I will leave the camp with my sister. We will go to the village of my mother, to the village of her family. Our family” (Walters 111). I actually don’t agree with this decision. Even though the book has a happy ending, this doesn’t seem like the wisest thing to do. Muchoki is barely 14 years old and his sister is only seven years old. She is still very young and will get tired very easily. They have no money, very little food and they have no idea where they are going. They have never been to Kikima before and don’t know how to get there. There is wildlife at night and they don’t have a weapon or the skills to fight off any animal or person. Their country are in the midst of political turmoil and violence and tey could potentially come face to face with protesters. They don’t know what the distance is to their final destination and they don’t have a map either. On top of that, they don’t even know if the family, whom they have never met before, still live there since their mother left many years ago. I think this would be a very dangerous decision and even though there are many negative aspects in two siblings being separated and sent to two different orphanages, I think that there are just too many risks and even potentially death, in going on a journey with the little resources that they have.

Every instinct in my body would tell me not to let the tiger back onto the boat with me. But again how can I just watch a living animal die in front of me? I think the latter instincts would kick in and I would help Richard Parker back onto the boat. I believe it would’ve been such a hard decision for Pi but as a zookeeper his instincts are to always protect the animals. Other than his zookeeper instincts his religious beliefs are to never kill a life, he would be battling a fight within himself on what to do. Regardless, I believe Pi did the right thing because in the end Richard Parker ignited a fire within him to fight for survival.

After Pi brainstormed 6 plans on how to get rid of Richard Parker, the novel states, "And so it came to be: Plan Number Seven: Keep Him Alive.". This shows the moment that Pi recognized he needs to keep the animal alive in order to protect himself from becoming Richard Parker's supper. I wholly believe this remains one of the best decisions Pi made on his journey as he can observe the animal and avoid becoming Richard parker's supper. Over time, Pi also decided to domesticate the Bengal tiger, which was also an extremely smart decision as it helped stabilize Pi's mental state in an incredibly traumatizing situation.

Norman, who was an artist, moved away and when Morries wife Charlette, had to have major surgery he failed to reach out to Morrie or Charlette to wish them well. I agree with Morrie in his decision to terminate the friendship for this reason. It shows that Norman didn't care much for a close bond with them.

In the book Tuesdays With Morrie. I am happy that Morrie is a character in the book because he really helped put Mitch's life into perspective. He helped him heal and grow. I really enjoyed reading and learning from this book as well. What a beautiful story.
