The Great Mosque of Kairouan, also known as the Mosque of Uqba, was founded in 670 AD by the Arab general Uqba ibn Nafi. It was significantly rebuilt in 836 AD by the Aghlabid ruler Emir Ziyadat Allah I, adding the current prayer hall, courtyard, and minaret. In the 11th century, the Zirid dynasty further enhanced its decorations. The mosque is an important example of early Islamic architecture and has remained a vital religious and cultural site, influencing Islamic architecture in North Africa.

Tunisia became a Muslim country through the spread of Islam during the early Islamic conquests. After the death of the Prophet Muhammad in 632 AD, Muslim armies began expanding into North Africa. By the late 7th century, the region that is now Tunisia was part of the Umayyad Caliphate, which established Islamic rule. The influence of Islam was further solidified through subsequent dynasties, including the Aghlabids and Fatimids, who contributed to the spread of Islamic culture and practices. Over time, Islam became deeply integrated into the cultural and religious fabric of Tunisia.
